This past weekend I was climbing at Jackson Falls with a friend. We were in the Railroad rock area when I spotted a cute frog that needed rescuing. So I did the right thing, picked it up, and moved the little fella to a safe spot. However, it didn't occur to me at the time, but I probably should have washed my hands. I then proceeded to eat my lunch: Raspberry rage trailmix, walnuts and some apple peels.
Upon returning to camp, I had a massive headache that would just not go away, so I drank some water and tried eating some red bean and rice burritos. Nothing helped. IT was around 7 o'clock when I went to bed, only waking up once in the night to stagger into the woods, puking all the way. I felt a little better, so I decided to lay back down and try to sleep it off. The next morning I woke up feeling fresh as a basket full of clean linens.
In short, my friend and I did a little research, and we found out that it was a Pickerel Frog (Rana palustris). Not normally dangerous to humans, but if the enzymes from the skin happen to be ingested, they can cause mild discomfort, vomiting or even death. Although death is unlikely, if a copious amount were consumed, death would seem imminent.

licking toads is a well known method of dulling the pain from finger cracks ... unfortunately there may be side effects

What we can learn from this story is a metaphor for life:
Girls, if you try kissing some toads looking for your prince, you're going to get sick and maybe even die. This is because there is no such thing as a toad that turns into a prince, let alone said prince. Avoid toads and kissing them at all costs. Continue on to the climbing instead.

You could have got sick from the chemicals in all those apple peels.

Glad you're ok. You just never know. I got a splitting migraine one time from just touching a mushroom. I almost had to go the hospital this summer while visiting Alaska due to a spider bite of all things. The little suckers know I hate them.

I grew the apples in my victory garden, no chemicals, just skinned apples composted for fertilizer.

Thanks for that! man, if Leopard frogs had that kind of an issue my brothers and I would have been dead as pups:-)
Actually, they do cross breed with Pickerels in some midwest locations, best to just take care handling any wild creature, toad or frog. Appreciate teh heads up.
Like we need to hear about another animal that will kill us:-)
