Just wanted to chime in... I'm from Indiana and I'd like to keep up with others in this part of the state. Seneca? 22nd?

I am not a fan of that place, its definitely a workout and nothing more. It feels like I am at a gym! And to say the inside is tough on the fingers is an understatement! I made it about 1/3 of the way around! The outside is great for working with just your feet and not using your hands!

Happy New Year! Seems like no one is climbing anymore... As per New Years tradition, we still managed to get out drytooling, despite the rain and poor weather conditions. Thanks to Tim and Ray for ringing in the new year with me at the NEW crag! Smile

Lived in Warren, PA all my life and didn't get into climbing until I moved to Buffalo (which has zero rocks). The National Forest is riddled with little unknown bouldering and TR areas. I recently stumbled upon www.flyingnutmuncher.com which has some pics + vids of the area.

If anyone lives in the greater Warren metropolitan area and wants to get out, hit me up! I'm interested in TR and have no aversion to climbing in the winter.

I believe that a lot of interest in climbing outdoors in WPA is disappearing due to the closure of some places to climb. Climbers are wrongly blamed for trash and abuse of climbing areas and owners become upset and close them. I think owners are also too worried when it comes to liability issues, injuries, etc. I've been climbing at the Climbing Wall in Pittsburgh and I'm surprised at how many people there have never climbed on real rock.

It seems that you just have not hooked up with the right group. I started climbing last year and have met up with a group of guys that go outside regularly. It is very rare that someone does not get out an invitation to the group. New River Gorge, Seneca, a ton of places in the Dunbar area and so on. There is the better part of a dozen in our group alone. Just ask around, I have been outside already this year and we plan on a trip somewhere this Sunday! As far as the closure issues you mentioned, I only know of two areas that have been closed. White rocks due to land owner reasons and High Rocks due to a bat infection issue (although some still climb there). Other than that there is little closure in our area that I know of. Investigate the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh (ECP) hook up with that group and you'll have invitations every weekend or send me a message and I will try to get you in our loop. You only have to get through the hazing ritual (carrying every ones pack the first year) and give four pints of plasma and your first born to get in, LOL!!

I was really upset about DHR closing. I starting climbing there when I was a kid. I also heard that some of the area in Dunbar are closed also. I don't live in Pittsburgh. I live in Indiana, PA. I'm trying to find a job in the Pittsburgh area so I can move out there but you know the job market, it sucks. As far as hazing is concerned, I'll pass. I was in a fraternity in college and I've been in the Air National Guard for almost 10 years. I've done my share of hazing. Also, climbing isn't my only outdoor sport. So, weekends often fill up with other stuff. I'm gonna try to make more of an effort this year but we'll see.

The hazing was a joke. The only thing I has to endure was being called the FNG and incredibly long approaches! You bike or Kayak? If you ever get to the Pittsburgh area, the ECP is a must for those that love outdoors and adventure sports! They are into everything! Good Luck getting out side this year!

While I was in college, during the summer one year, I was a rafting guide in Ohiopyle. I've done a little yakking, but more biking. I need to replace my wheels right now. I both of them are square after my last run down Sugarloaf trail and the Gorge trail.

Hey, Reserve.... I'm in Indiana also! We should join up. I go to the Mills a lot, and I have my eye on some ANF spots and other stuff. There's a lot of undeveloped/underdeveloped stuff around :) DHR is a bummer... I went out there this fall and it was posted all around by DER
