Headed to Joshua Tree this weekend, need to be in Hidden Valley at about 8am on Saturday, but won't get there until about midnight Friday night. Is Hidden Valley likely to be full on a Friday night, or is there a pretty good chance I will get a spot. If its full whats a good backup place to hit nearby?

Josh has become a nightmare to get a campsite, especially when arriving on Friday nights. I've become very disenchanted with it, and now mostly go to the Eastside Sierra. But it sounds like you are meeting up with folks, if they have a site, the limit is not on number of people or tents, but on the number of vehicles (2) per site. The rangers have a tendency to think they are super cops and will give you a ticket. Some people go to Indian Cove, several miles up the road from the main entrance, and there are places where people camp outside of the park proper. Most don't recommend that one leaves their stuff unattended during the day. There is a site for Friends of Joshua Tree where you might get more guidance.

If you're just two people and one car, you may be able to join someone else's site. If that doesn't work or you're a larger group, the sites at Ryan CG are quite nice, pretty quiet at night too.

Unfortunately, dont think people are going to take kindly to us begging to share their site in the middle of the night ;) maybe if we were getting there at a reasonable hour.. Will check out the BLM land and Ryan CG.
