How many of you girls out there actually climb ice or at least want to? Where are some of the more notable places you've climbed? Where have you encountered the best ice/your favorite place?

It's sad to me that there aren't more women ice climbers out there. At least I haven't found many in my experience. What are the reasons that you don't want to climb ice?

Does any of you like ice more than rock? Why do you climb ice or want to climb ice? Let's hear some good opinions and stories. I suppose I am just curious and want to hear what all of you think about ice climbing...

Thanks,
from a fellow ice climber.

My boyfriend just bought all the gear to climb ice.....once i saw the price tag, i realized regardless of my wants it will be awhile before i can make that investment.....one sport at a time. i am working on building my rack right now and damn....that's a lot of cash too.

There's a place in southern Illinois that gives lessons so fingers crossed, I'm going to try it soon. My motivation...the intensity and beauty of the ice.

I've ice-climbed for a few seasons. I like it, but I could never recommend it to anyone else in good conscience. It's too dangerous, I have had close calls. I wish luck and safety to anyone who gives it a try. Wear a helmet.

I would love to try ice...was wondering if it is tougher on your body than rock -- I have degenerating discs in my back and don't know if it would be to hard on it??????

Well, I feel the most fatigue in my arms and my calves, of course. I think it's kind of hard to compare to rock. But, when you get to vertical ice, that's when your arms will start to really feel it.

In some thread that I can no longer find, I promised y'all I'd post a report of my very first-est ice climbing adventure. For those of you who haven't seen it:

http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=24072&forum=30&8

And even after all of that, I'm going again February 8-9.

Well, as it is told in Katydid's tale- I got my ice legs last weekend too! I can say I felt the effort the next day when I could barely raise my arms- but in a good way if you know what I mean!
Ice was exciting and terrifying all at the same time. I found it far more tiring than rock, but a much steeper learning curve- I could get up the same routes as the experienced guys we were with, although with less finesse and in much more time!
I can't wait to go again, and the only thing REALLY stopping me from making it a regular thing is funding! It's just so darn expensive!
On a side note, if you are going ice climbing in -16 (+windchill) with a whole bunch of guys, I strongly advise peeing before you go! No foliage coverage and the threat of frostbitten bum is enough to remind you of why there may be more men in this sport....

i just ice climbed for the first time last weekend and IT WAS AWESOME! even in full winter blizzard conditions!
i cant wait to get out again and do more!
i was actually surprised, i thought it would be much more similar to rock climbing than it actually was. it took me a bit to get the feet thing down.
and i have to agree that the worst part about it is the cost. does anyone know what the deal with buying used gear is? is it worth it or should i save and wait to get stuff new?

I actually think it would be pretty awesome to ice climb, but I don't know anyone who could teach me, maybe I should ask around. I think it would be slammin' fun........
