In a couple of weeks I'm off to the UK and I was planning to do some climbing in Wales. Does anyone know any good places to climb there for newbies

Are you talking about ROCK climbing? You realise a couple of weeks from now is going to be mid December? Far from the ideal time for rock climbing in the UK. If it was me I'd be taking my ice gear to Scotland. But anyway - back to Wales. If by good fortune you do get some unseasonably mild dry weather (I doubt you will be able to change the heavens and get a sunset to happen later then about 3:45PM though) you ought to go to Llanberis Pass. The epi-center of Welsh climbing with well over 100 years of climbing. Spectacular country side, nice rock, climbs of all levels. I had a couple of my most memorable climbing days there a few years ago. Just don't get hung up on the grades. They are old school trad grades. None of this inflated sport nonsense.

And as noted it will be more likely ice climbing by then in Wales or the Peak, best chance is down south on the Dorset coast.

UK and climbing in December don't really go well together. You could get some good days and admittedly the hardest gritstone climbs are usually done in winter. But most days look like this...... Good time of year for sitting in a cozy pub enjoying some feastive cheer though. Check out UKclimbing.com for information. http://www.ukclimbing.com/

Raven Tor stays dry, Kinda not great for beginners though . Sure you could go a sit around in a pub, Or you could go and climb indoors and THEN go to the pub. Also that's perfect grit-stone weather right there!

I'm not sure what these guys are talking about. December can be great, there are just fewer great days than in other months. Get to the Peak District and be ready to go where the weather is good. You'll love climbing grit in the cold.
