im surprised there was no knot at the end of it ... or it wasnt tied off to the next set of anchors below ...

He was on a 70 meter dynamic rope set up as a top-rope so we could rehearse the moves before placing the bolts.

The rope extended way past the anchor at the top of the first pitch so we weren't planning to go anywhere near the end of the rope. You're right, we should have put knots in the ends anyway.
