So I'm looking for a chin-up bars to put up in my doorway. I live in a dorm, which means any sort of permanent fixture is out. Anything with screw is brackets is out. Anything with a cantilever design is out because the molding of the door is flush with the wall.
So what I'm really looking for is a chin-up bar with a strong spring mechanism that will stay up just on the pressure it exerts on the opposite sides of the door way. Does anyone know where I could find such a thing? I just spent an hour googling this and everything I found either has screw on brackets or is the cantilever type. :(

i have one in my doorway u just have to twist it so that its tight....i dont remember where i got it though...iv had it for a while....sorry..but they do exsist
it might have been fitness depot ore something.....i dunno what uve got down there (im guessing ur in the states)

I don't think we have Fitness Depot, but that gives me an idea for another way to search it.

I used one of those telescoping bars at my dorm. It came with metal caps and screws, which I did not use. However, if your door frame is weak, like wood, you can break the jams before the bar can support weight. My door frame was made of metal and concrete.
The bar expanded by twisting it.

Yeah, since I'm in a dorm, the doorway is steel as well. I had that thought earlier...that if it was the twist kind I could probably just use it without the little screw-on jobbies.

The penalty for drilling a finger board to the wall will be slight, and the benefits will outweigh it.

Does your school allow lofts? It was pretty common on day one in college to hire some dudes to come over and for $150 or so build a lofted bed system. Most designs leave you with a nice crossbeam going across the room where you can mount hangboard/rock rings/etc.
Another option is to build a freestanding chin-up bar.

You want the Iron Gym. I've had mine for years and it is awesome. Fairly cheap too, at $25. Bullet-proof strong too. Assembles in a snap.

We have this in our door in the fron hall and we hop on it every time we go by...plenty of t nut holes, pull up bar, no mounting to walls or door frame. Fits almost any door but needs to have decent clearance height above for the board.

I also recommend the Iron Gym. The spring type chinup bars will not hold reliably and one day you will find yourself flat on your butt as the bar slips.
