I've recently started into a regiment of strenuous up-hill hiking; training for mountaineering. I do a daily 780' altitude gain. My question is; is it better to just keep pushing day after day, or should I lay off when I manage to get a calf burn? Should I schedule in rest days, regardless?

Calf burn? Do you mean shinsplints? You can work through shinsplints but if you aren't taking recovery days, it will take a lot longer. It could make it a chronic injury which is kind of a bummer.

Your body gets stronger while resting, not climbing. So if you have serious calf stiffness it would be good to lay off, otherwise you are digging yourself into a deeper hole which will be harder to get out off. I have learned that too little rest always ends in injury or sickness. So one day a week of rest would be good. Eric
