So you know that crap law thats currently under legislation called SOPA? You know, the one that wants to strip you of your online rights and censor a host of websites? Well recently a list of official supporters was released and guess who was on that list? Petzl. However Petzl was quick to recant with an official press statement stating, "Petzl America has not and does not support SOPA or the Protect IP Act. Nor do we support any legislation that would harm the freedom of the Internet." I wonder if Petzl originally supported the bill but than came under heat for supporting such an unpopular quark. With their reputation at stake, they released this statement once they realized no one actually supports this crap shot. I hope I am wrong. http://www.petzl.com/...tect-ip#comment-3342 And for those interested in the truth behind SOPA: http://www.youtube.com/...sc&feature=share This thing is a seriously evil bill. It is undoubtedly the biggest threat to civil rights that has been presented so far this decade. The sad thing is that many of the key members that support this bill, such as CNET, Disney and MSN, use to support illegal file sharing. They enabled their users to illegally download media by hosting torrent and P2P programs on their websites. They even went as far as to suggest, and allow their users to search for, music and other media that you could illegally download through the programs they branded and hosted. Now they are all big into stopping the sharing of illegal media, after they already made billions off of it. Talk about do as I say, not as I do. These guys have to be the biggest hypocrites of the century.

I understand why Petzl would support a bill like SOPA. If they saw it as a way to protect their brand from dangerous knockoffs. With that said, SOPA is some seriously dumb legislation. If you owned a website I didn't like (say a congressman) and there were images on there that I could possibly claim the copyright to (say an image of the city the congressman was from), ask it would take is a letter to the sure hosting the web page (written in appropriate legal language) and the hosting company would take down the site or, if my claim is correct, the hosting site would be as culpable as the offending site. Hosting companies would be dropping sites left and right. Kiss RC.com goodbye (yes, I just used another wrbsites domain name - they could now send a letter like mine.) Godaddy backpeddled, I wonder who is next?

Anyone have a breakout of who belongs to the Outdoor Industry Association so we can start a list clarifying the position of each? I definitely want to know which gear brands are trying to help pass this terrible legislation.

Ok, I found a press release from the Outdoor Industry Association stating that they were mistakenly included, because they had expressed support for shutting down counterfeiting on a US chamber of Commerce website. The chamber apparently took this to mean they could include them as SOPA supporters, which the Outdoor Industry Association says they are not and haven't been. However, many outdoors companies are still members of the chamber of commerce, and the chamber still supports SOPA. http://www.outdoorindustry.org/news.webnews.php?newsId=15624&newsletterId=253&newsSubType=Trade&utm_source=informz&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=WN20120104%20Issues&action=display
