Alright so our Hueco Tanks trip is cancelled because of our procrastination but thats ok time for something new. Me and three other climbers from DFW have a week to climb from Jan 7-15 and are coming through arkansas. We might stop by some stuff in oklahoma but my main focus is getting info for arkansas. Most likely going to hit up Horseshoe Cannon but other than that i dont really know. Were not amazing but we are all strong climbers. I'm looking for fun areas that include, good sport climbs from 5.10-5.12, a really good bouldering area is very important to me even if that is all there is there. top rope is not that important and none of us climb trad, We are cheap college students and whereever we go we would prefer to camp for free even if its a little ways from the climbs. We have a full week so if you have a location thats a little far but you really recommend it, still tell me. I really dont want to buy any guide books for this one trip so if someone can hook me up with any that are floating around that we be sweet. Also if anyone wants to climb with us or just chill that would be cool. I"m sure there will be a lot of heavy drinking. Thanks, Shea

HCR is great, but if you're wanting to go cheap here are a couple smaller places just as good (maybe better) that are both in Cowell, AR. You can camp there for free. Have fun Fountain Red - some of the best boulders in Arkansas. You don't want to miss this place. Be sure to get on Le Beak. To get there, once you turn on 1204 (cowell road) drive past the Invasion wall (it'll be on your left) to 1204D (on your left). The boulders will be up ahead on the left. http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/Arkansas/Ozarks/Fountain_Red/ http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/Arkansas/Ozarks/Fountain_Red/Fountain_Red/Le_beak_61080.html The Invasion Wall - Some sick 5.11/5.12 lines on a beautiful gently overhung wall // To get to the Invasion Wall, once you turn onto the dirt road (that is, Cowell), keep driving until you see 1204C on your left. Turn there and park up on the right. You will walk down from the right side of the road and then walk left along the cliff line. You'll see the giant wall with many fixed draws. This is the invasion wall. Here's a pic http://www.rockclimbing.com/photos/Topo/THE_INVASION_WALL_69690.html

I would say Invasion isn't worth it unless you climb mid-hard 5.12's. The 11s there are choss.

I agree. Also, sport climbing in general in Arkansas will probably suck in mid January. your digits will freeze half way up. don't go to sam's throne if you don't trad climb. there are some select sport climbs and bouldering, but most of its surrounding areas are sport and trad areas. As I would suggest bouldering for this time of year, I'd say either go to cowell or horseshoe. It really just depends on what feel you are going for, as both areas have plenty of bouldering. Horseshoe will have plenty of people, the camping is pretty open and is on ranch land. Font red camping is on Ozark Nat. Forest land, is in the woods away from civilization, and will definitely be less crowded. if you shoot me an email around the time you are going, I might could help you out further.
