I just returned from another great trip. When I left on the 23rd of December, there were perhaps 60 climbers. Many fewer than years past. Here is what I noticed.
A criminal gang was arrested in an Hidalgo bar 2 weeks ago. As a consequence, there was a strong Mexican army presence. I saw them most days.
The variety of local prepared food is less than it was. Furthermore, prices are up.
All in all, not changes for the better, and I was told by a local that "we are now putting bars on our windows, where we were accustomed to leaving our doors unlocked".
Hidalgo is still a great place to visit. I'll go back. Just a bit of a heads up. Furthermore, I was told problems were less in Monterrey--I didn't visit this time.
