A South Carolina Man appears to have died after a lead/ground fall off of Good Samaritan at the Cereal Buttress at Rumbling Bald. There is some discussion about it on the CCC website. It seems that he placed gear low on the route and then fell after climbing into groundfall territory. Very sorry to hear about this unfortunate and tragic accident.

This is from the site

A guy named Bill fell off "good Samaritan" at about 12:30pm today. He and his partner may have been confused as to which route they were on (his partner told me they were looking for fruit loops). Bill placed a solid looking #3 camelot about 10-12 feet up but according to his partner was about 25-30 feet up the corner doing a layback move when he came off the wall.

I heard a little while ago that Bill did not pull though. My condolences to his family and climbing parner.

Ah fuck. That is so shitty. Off route, damn.

Didn't someone fatally deck like 20 feet away from that route last year? Unsure

thanks for the update

i wonder if there was gear above that first piece ... not looking to judge, but i would like to know if it was a confidence or lack of gear as to the single piece

a single piece of gear off the ground scares me silly

The route turns to offwidth pretty quick off the ground. MP.com says you can clip an off route bolt to avoid lugging big gear.

Just to clear things up...

I was on belay below Bill. He had placed a #3 about 12ish ft up. He climbing another 10ish ft or so and was working on placing another piece of pro. We had discussed using the bolts that were mentioned, but they were out of reach.

As Bill tried to move into a position where he could place another piece, he lost his footing and fell.

Sad to hear the news; and my condolences.

I gather he must have sustained head injuries? Did he wear a helmet?
