Like a lot of you, I am trying to get in on the madness at Portero this winter, but flying is not too ideal for me- it's muy caro. (expensive)
Is there an economical way to get there via bus? I'm assuming not many people will be driving there via Tucson, AZ Though if they were...
Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Mmmm... bus ride through Mexico... fun...
Actually, if you spend a little extra $$ and go 'first class' the buses in Mexico are pretty swanky. You could go to the nearest border town (not sure which that would be for you) and maybe get a bus that goes from there to Chihuaha to Monterey. Getting to El Potrero from there might be a little trickier, but I'm sure you could find transportation (bus or cab).
On the other hand, if you can swing it, drive yourself

I know of no busses that go straight to Hidalgo or Potrero. Usually the closest if to Monterrey. If you can get a bus to any town in Texas along I-35, me and my crew could drive you the rest of the way (cut down on gas prices, woohoo!).

Well, due to people flaking out on my trip, I too will be traveling to Potrero via bus on the 30th, I think. Greyhound tickets to Monterrey are $27, but their service is only one way. I planned to take a taxi to Hidalgo from there. That will probably run $45, I think. It's not as bad when you split it 4 ways. Anyways, good luck, PM me if need be, and see you there!

I have had 4 climbers + gear in a Mexican taxi. And honestly, I think it very well may have been a 1988 sentra! Not just climbing gear either... full on mountaineering gear and clothes for a week-long trip. I think we just piled it up in the trunk, and roped the trunk lid down as tight as possible so stuff wouldn't fall out. You can accomplish anything in Mexico if your negotiating skills are finely honed.

yeah def. drive. rent a car and get it fully insured if you wont' be staying long. i took my motorcycle *almost* that far. if i can do it on a bike, there is no way someone right on the border can't do it in a car.

I am a firm believer in bus travel, especially in mexico. A couple of years ago, my friends and I took busses from Costa Rica all the way home to Utah.
When I went to El Portrero Chico last April, I had a business trip to San Antonio then rode a bus to Monterey and a taxi to Homero's (a quick walk to the climbing). If you want to leave your car at home, ride a bus TO the border, walk across, then catch a mexican bus to Monterey. My friends caught an American bus that went all the way across the border to Monterey and had to spend like four hours at the border, while it only took me a few minutes to walk across the rio grand and catch a cab to the bus station. "Primero" class busses are comfortable, clean, and have bathrooms and movies and run about 3-5 dollars per hour, maybe more, maybe less. From the bus terminal in Monterey you can either find the local bus to Hidalgo for about 50 cents or take a cab. The going rate when I was there was about 200 pesos one way, I didn't know that and talked a guy down to 100 pesos. I would definitely ride the bus again, the only draw back is that you have to have the extra time needed to get there and back.

I live here at Mty and I can drive you to Potrero from Mty Bus Station, also there's another area called La Huasteca with very good crags, just let me know one or two days before you arrive....
I'll spend entire January at Mty free of compromises because at February I'm leaving to Toronto for english lessons (grammar, GMAT, conversation, etc)

faster to cross into the US? haha at the border to get into TJ there's just a big ass metal gate that revolves into mexico only. coming back you have to wait in line and get all your $#!& scanned and questioned. for some reason they always think i'm carrying drugs...

I'm planning on going to portrero for christmas. It looks like I could fly directly into Monterrey (from minnesota) for about $575 or fly into San Antonio for $375 and bus it from there. Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

I think it's better that you fly to san antonio an take the buss, it's just a 7 hours trip and you can save like a 100 bucks, that means a a hole week in potrero chico with all included jeje.

You could just ask Enigma to give you a ride. Apparently she is cool with driving a lot since it took her 10,000 miles to get from New England to Cali. I'm sure she would love to follow you up some routes since she can't lead even after a 1 year road trip.

You can fly to Laredo as cheaply as San Antonio and then you only have a 3 hour bus ride (17 dollars). You can catch the bus on the US side and they will stop at the border for you to purchase your tourist card (18 dollars). From Monterrey you take the bus to Hidalgo (2 dollars) or take a cab (20 dollars). Feel free to pm me for more detailed directions, ie you don't have to ride the bus all the way into downtown Monterrey and then back out again if you know where to get off at the edge of town.

what is the weather like in the 4 seasons? any breakdown out there? for you arizonans it looks like you can fly into laredo for 275 from phx. use expedia...
