That's a great read.

Jefferson, Madison, and a lot of the other more democratic early political thinkers believed that, as soon as religion lost all state sponsorship (a la Anglicanism) and unjust power (Catholicism), that all Americans would simply rationally gravitate towards rational Unitarianism or even Deism.

In other words, "humans can't possibly be so stupid as to believe all this, so if we separate religion from the tools of state coercion, it will simply die a natural death!"

Unfortunately, for a variety of reason, the exact opposite happened, and America got MORE religious and MORE irrational.

Of all of Jefferson's radical misestimations of human nature, this might have been the greatest.
