Hi Everyone, I've been visiting this site for some time but this is the first time I'm posting. I have an Ethnography due for a university course and I want to do it on Rock climbers but I need some help. Please answer one of the following questions. Keep in mind that by culture I mean a unique lifestyle or way of life that a group of people share that is not directly related to the activity they have in common. i.e. All rock climbers climb, (obviously) but what else do we do that makes us unique, like being addicted to hemp... or maybe that is just me. 1) Do you consider Rock climbers (indoor, outdoor, etc.) a unique culture (or sub-culture)? If so a brief reason why. 2) What sets rock climbers apart from other sub-cultures (i.e. Musicians, body builders, S&M enthusiasts - p.s. I realize that being a rock climber doesn't preclude involvement in another group)? 3) What are some common traits that rock climbers share? Some basic traits that I can think of that I share with my other buddies are respect for the environment, outdoorsy nature, and being a bit of a gear head. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Things that set climbers apart from: Musicians: our fingers aren't as nimble Body Builders: we're smaller S&M: no difference; it hurts, and most of us just do it to get laid. Oh, and if you really have been spending a lot of time on this site, you would know that climbers have nothing in common with one another, apart from climbing on rocks (and even that's debatable). You are SO going to fail this assignment.

A fierce sense of individualism, that's an excellent trait but not one that I expected. Well, you go where the data takes you. Thanks, Marty

Lol, I'm not here to judge :) Paper is going well, I'm just using conversations in other streams for my references if anyone is wondering.

Truthfully I don't think their is anything particular special or unique about ANY rock climbers that couldn't be said about some other of physically active outdoor pursuits. Not saying that I don't think climbing is way more fun than those other active outdoor pursuits.

In my experience, the people who really tend to identify as "climbers" really are not that serious about climbing and tend to not even show a hint of shame about lame they are.
