Good effort but the motion of the helmet-cam was a bit much, and by the 3-minute mark I got dizzy and fell off the couch. I did like the giant nose and mustache perspective, however.

Great music choice but videos should show how awsome you are not how well you can top rope 5.7 And yeah a bit to muc motion and no girls in sport bras.

good music. liked the angle looking down on the climber's face. probably a bit too much of the helmet cam in general, particularly with regards to showing the climber climbing. as others have said, that made it difficult to not get seasick.
you missed an opportunity at the first belay to show the exposure on the traverse (I'm assuming there is exposure there) before trying the traverse.
Climbing with wedding ring can be dangerous. Be aware, and no, please don't ask to see pictures of degloving. look them up yourself.
I think you could have fixed some of the motion problems by mixing in a few shots of the leader leading and / or a few shots from the top looking back down on the second / third (Similar to the rap section at the end).
The color at the 4:05 mark was really nice.
I liked it, but as others said, the motion took away from it. Good luck in the future.

I actually didn't much care for the music, though maybe it was because of what everyone said about the motion making one a bit seasick. I felt I could have been less seasick, though, with a more tranquil choice of music. That said, you got some beautiful shots of WV in the fall, and captured the feel of some fun climbing. :)

Thanks for the critiques everyone. I pretty much just went out and shot whatever on this past trip. I also ran out of memory and battery way too early. Next time I'll work on setting up better/different shots, incorporating more interesting angles, and bring along more cameras, memory and batteries. :)

I think time is also one of your big areas for improvement.
Remember that, sometimes, less is more. Just because you have 4 minutes of footage you like, doesn't mean you should use all of it. You're not publishing a move-by-move beta video (right?) so feel free to exclude shots that already look very similar to other shots.
Along those lines, be brutal with your cuts. 30 seconds of car time is unnecessary, when 10 seconds of car time works as well. A minute of the same pitch is unnecessary, when you can just hit the highlight and move on.
All in all, though, I'm actually really impressed with your second effort at this. I can tell you learn well by seeing what others do. Keep watching—from now on with a filmmaker's eye—and you'll start to notice the editing tricks others use to subtly but effectively move the story forward.

In reply to: Nice video. Seneca is a great place. Good job. One thought though...how do you find climbing the cracks at Seneca with a watch and a wedding ring on? I personally would find that to be difficult...specially at the harder grade cracks there. In any event keep up the good work. |

Thanks for the all the critiques. I'm planning my second video shoot at the end of this month when we travel to Mt Washington in NH for some ice climbing and a winter summit hike.

You go way overboard with the fisheye- I was getting really motion sick when you were panning around the mountains near the beginning. Also, I'm not sure if the music choice was appropriate...heavy dubstep screams V15 boulder problems, not 5.7 trad (no offense to your climbing abilities.) As well, when I see people's mouths moving I expect to hear words, not have you dub music over the top.
