so Peter Pan can raise a child army and everyone's cool with that, but as soon as a black guy does it...

I trust you've all watched, read or heard about Kony and the Uganda ordeal. Part of me is happy that attention is being drawn to such heinous and despicable acts, but the more jaded side of me can't help but facepalm in despair. I mean, how many people can find Uganda on a map, and how many dozens of places in Africa have similar situations going on right now? I hope the whole movement against this guy won't stop at just him, but will continue down the ladder to get everyone responsible for making the world a much, much shittier place.

Joseph Kony is not Peter Pan. Kony's child captives are not the lost boys in Neverland. Nobody's cool with child soldiers for the Lord's Resistance Army, but Peter's kids are fantasy. Kony is black but that does not set him apart. He is a criminal in Uganda, and is accused of massive war crimes by the rest of the world. So your sentiments are OK, it's your title that stinks.

It's not a very nice joke, but I still really hope you're kidding. Either that or you think that this is a new fad simply because it's new to Facebook. The LRA is not new, and it's the most evil organization since the Khmer Rouge. GO

Sorry the title offended you, I'll replace it if I think up a wittier one. I agree with your entire post except where you say it's no matter that Kony is black. I've no problem with people based on their skin or ethnicity, but the Western world seems to willingly ignore Africa and so many horrible, horrible things that have become routine in the continent. Sure, we can't fix the world, I'm not even suggesting we try, but we have to recognize that something is off with the fact that the media doesn't feature many stories on the mass murders and genocidal acts ocurred in Africa. Exactly why that is, I can only speculate, but the fact of the matter stands: the Western hemisphere and especially the Americas don't usually give Africa a second thought. It's good they brought the spotlight onto Kony, however it saddens me to think of how fickle that public attention really is, and that it may not last long enough to make an impact on the situation.

cracklover wrote: Oh, and no - I've not watched the new documentary or whatever. I'm not aware there's anything particularly new happening. If anything, Kony has been kind of on the ropes these last few years. But he's come back from this sort of thing before. I think it's great that more attention is being focused on him. GO Yes, I was kidding. Your not having seen the video at the moment of posting and still knowing who Kony is and what the LRA is says a lot by itself (if you can find Uganda on a map too, you're practically an insider on the issue compared to the rest of outraged masses). Focusing the publics attention on crimes against humanity is, by itself, a good thing. Toying and diverting that same public attention to other issues (their importance notwithstanding) because you don't want them to see what's going on elsewhere is smart strategy, but still a dick move. The media didn't start covering the whole SOPA situation until it was all everybody was talking about. Would they have reported on it otherwise? I dunno but I doubt it. Once it blew over, they immediately moved the spotlight to other (imo less important) issues, without society having really wrapped up the first one. I hope something similar doesn't happen here.

Disturbing but true. General Romeo Dallaire is a Canadian hero because of his involvement in Rwanda. He identified the genocide there, and did his best to stop it. But our various governments couldn't be bothered to help him. Now this Kona guy. I never heard about him ever, not until last month. So I guess that shows that we still just couldn't be bothered, again. Here in Calgary a lot of posters are appearing in public places, but I have no idea who is putting them up. But I don't have to worry, it's not in my back-yard.
