The reports indicate that the climber (Philippe Eynaudi, a French national living in Quebec City) fell around 9:20 on Sat. morning while high up on la Pomme d’or (a remote WI 5+ 350 m route) in the Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie parc in the Charlevoix region, sustaining serious injuries. Reports vary on the height of the fall (3 – 10 m). His partner (unnamed) brought him down to the base (tandem rappels, presumably) and other climbers volunteered to reach the nearest phone while the partner stayed with Philippe. First respondents arrived by snowmobile at 22:45 (some reports say 21:00 but most indicate that this is the time the 911 call was received) and transported him to the nearest hospital where his death was confirmed.

There doesn’t seem to be much point in providing links to the French language reports (for those interested, this synopsis provides all the keywords you could possibly need to google it for yourself) and the only English language report I could find (Montreal Gazette) was the shortest and least accurate of them all.

No details on the circumstances of the accident are available at this point.

RIP Philippe and condolences to family, friends and Philippe’s partner.
