When making a top rope anchor why can't I just simply put the rope around a sturdy tree.

It will result in loads of friction. It will wear your rope. You will damage the tree. You will potentially hurt future access by causing environmental damage. Other climbers will view you unfavorably for those last two reasons. Good troll.
