I'm visiting Oahu (Honolulu) for a few weeks and was looking for some places to climb or people to climb with. I got into climbing about 4 months ago and top rope about a 10b and boulder V1. Unfortunately I didn't bring my harness, just shoes so if there are any places I can rent one I can go ahead and do that.

Also, I've never climbed outdoors before.

You can rent equipment from the outdoor retailer Climb Aloha.

Are you recommending that someone rents gear?

He specifically asked for a place to rent gear, so he only has one option, the option I listed. I am recommending that if he wanted to rent gear, he go to that retailer. That shop is a legitimate climbing and professional rigging equipment retailer that caries a full line of gear and they offer guiding services.

To be fair, a lot of people are pretty offensive towards him. It's an understandable reaction.
