I'm going to be in the NY area late April/early May, and thought it would be nice to spend a couple of days in the Gunks climbing. I don't have any outdoor experience, and was looking online for classes to take.

Is this program any good? Can anyone give me recommendations or tips?

As for myself, I've been climbing indoors for about a year and a half, but would like to learn outdoor climbing skills.

How about accommodation in the area, hostels would be best if they have them.

If anyone would like a partner as well, let me know.

The New Paltz Hostel is on Main street. You will need a car to get to the cliff or you will have to thumb a ride. I would book well in advance, they book up early.

There are very few top rope set ups at the gunks. You will need to find a partner who leads or reach out to one of the certified guide services. EMS is one such service, there are at least 4 other guide services. If you can afford it I would hire a guide to take you out. HighXposure or Alpine Endeavors are great guide services. You can also call rock and snow in New Paltz and get more information on the certified guide services in the area.

Have fun!

I highly recommend Paul Curran with Vertical Gains. Easy going, safe and knowledgeable guide in the gunks. Can definitely help the transition from indoor to outdoor climbing.
