I've always had good experience with the Casio G-Shock series. Right now I'm using the Mud Man. I like all the features, it's damn tough, excellent for work-outs (timers) and looks cool (black with red accents and the light show when the alarm goes off is trick).

I like a watch that has an alarm, chrono, and countdown timer, and that is cheap enough to be treated as disposable. I can usually find different versions of the Ironman series that fit the bill somewhere online.

In reply to: I need one that can take a lot of beating. Well, if you need a watch that takes a licking and keeps on ticking, then you need a Timex. If you don't understand why, ask your dad (granddad? *gulp*). Jay

Here's a "lickin" story: My climbing partner being new to Casio G-Shocks wanted to find out how tough they were. He and his buddies decided to strap the watch to an ice hockey puck and proceeded to play ice hockey. At the end of their game, the watch had some minor scratches but the thing was still ticking away. He's now a firm believer in their durability.

It's because of the case. The actual timepiece is just a run of the mill casio quartz digital.

Yes, that's the beauty of it. I've got a Citizen Eco Drive Divers watch that I wouldn't wear climbing because the stainless steel case (huge and bulky as it is) would show the scratches due to it's polished finish. The crystal is sunken so that it's less likely to get damaged. My TAG Heuer got scratched on the crystal while mountain biking (I rubbed it up against a wire fence while squeezing through a makeshift gate) and I'm still kicking myself for it to this day. The G-Shock's case is a tough resin and being that it's black, it doesn't matter if it takes on cuts and scratches in a way that doesn't take much away from it's appearance. It's relatively inexpensive and lightweight when compared to my divers watches. I like that when I'm doing laps in the gym, I can even loop it on my gear loops so it's not on my wrist.

I'm pretty sure any casio or timex "sport watch" will do the trick. They're both usually under $15.

i wore a watch every single day for 13 or 14 years until i started climbing. i feel it just interferes with climbing too much and i always forget to take it off. i always wore a timex watch (i think iron man series?) and ended up throwing it to the ground half way through the climb every time(it never did get hurt). it was/is an awesome watch for the price. i've had 3 in 14 years and i only replaced them because the velcro wore out on the bands after years, but the watch itself kept going.
