Ok, but really: ham sandwich recipe request

I am sorry to everyone that all the topics I start are so ludicrous . . . but anyway. So I've been a vegetarian for the majority of my life, and thus whenever I find myself needing to prepare something with meat I rely heavily upon recipes. I understand that the concept of a ham sandwich (a.k.a. ham sammich) is a simple one--in fact, I might have even tried one once--yet I still feel some guidance would be helpful. (And yes, I did search the forums. Don't ask me why . . .) Please reply with your legit recipes for this climbing staple, the more specific the better, and hopefully not with links to pictures of ham. I do know what ham looks like. :)

I'll be nice...
Ham is like bacon's half-retarded little brother. What you want is the good shit, the big guy, the BACON. You need not shun the little guy entirely, but you need the bacon to be the flavor guide. Bacon tastes better than ham, keeps longer than ham, and tastes better than ham.

What you'll need for one sammich of awesomesauce:
2 slices of bread
6 strips of bacon (min)
2 slices of ham
Cheese (Gouda or cheddar work - bonus points if it's smoked)
A little bit of butter (mustard optional)

If it's not 1000 degrees out, you should really throw on some mayo and have some lettuce and tomato slices at the ready. Don't put them on the sammich, they make it soggy.

Or you can do the dirtbag delight: 2 pieces of bread with ham in the middle, butter and/or Swiss/havarti if you're rich and can afford such luxuries.

Okay, I got you covered.

First off never, NEVER, belittle the importance of the bread. Bread quality/type can make or break a good sammach.
Secondly, ham sammaches need mayo. Not too much, but enough to stop it being all dry (because you used nice thick tasty bread, right?).

The ham... Don't shit out and use crap ham. Get some fucking meat.

Lettuce. Well, it's lettuce.

Mustard - some people like it, other people are wrong.

So, mayo on piece, mustard the other. Put the lettuce on the mayo side - don't let the ham touch the mayo you monster - and the ham on top of it. Add mustard bread.

You now have a sammach.

I find the difference in a good versus great ham sandwich is the inclusion of some onion.

This thread is the silly, but I have important advice:
I'm a vegetarian too. I'm also a sport climber. Ham sandwiches are for trad climbers. You have to eat for your genre. (I have no idea what boulderers eat, but I'm sure its gross) I don't really like red bull though...non fat triple iced latte for me.

ok. here we go.
eat at home ham sandwich:
you need
-Excellent white bread
-butter
-Egg
-ham
-tomato
-some cheese (skip if you only get the usual plastic tasting crap)
-Mayo
-very little mustard

1. put butter in pan, dont let get too hot.
2. toast bread in butter, both sides
3. put some more butter in pan and Fry egg over easy
4. put some mayo on one bread, and some mustard on the other
5. put ham on mustard, then, tomato, egg and add the other bread.
6 put back in pan and toast for another 30 seconds so that the bread gets warm again.
7. try to eat without making a mess - and fail (the eggyolk should ooze over the entire sandwich)

cheers

Didn't see this before, but it's pretty spot on.

I'd add lettuce and bacon to make it a Ham BLT, but that's just getting fancy.

Well, I didn't actually try one myself, but I think they went well. I used really nice multigrain bread, with mayo, swiss cheese, lettuce, and organic honey-maple ham; Inglehoffer mustard on the side. The ladies at the bridal shower seemed to enjoy them! Smile

No, whats wrong is that at least one of those sammiches was supposed to go in mah belly, seeing as how it was part of the climbing deal we made. Then, not only did I completely forget about the sammiches the day of, but had I actually remembered and demanded my rightful payment for services rendered, I would have gotten bupkis. Mad

Yeah, I didn't remember either until too late!! Blush Well, next time you will have them with interest--I'll try doing the bacon w/ ham as recommended by Kartessa.
