I believe I have discovered a first ascent in the Ramapo Reservation - Who can help me set an anchor? Email: GilAdler@Gmail.com

What do you mean by "set an anchor"? Add bolts? Have you climbed it or just want to but don't know how to make an anchor to try it?

Also, where is that? The county park? Is climbing allowed there? This isn't the "transit cliffs" is it? Nothing turns up in the route DB for Ramapo except Camp Tamarack. The way that page is written doesn't sound like that is really open either. Maybe talking to local climbers is a better and more fruitful option than posting on here?

So to clarify on my previous post -- I found a rock feature, 40-60 feet in vertical height in Mahwah - the Ramapo Res. I haven't yet climbed it, and I don't think bolts are even necessary. However if someone were to top-rope these routes, there needs be an anchor set at the top (my terminology might be off).

I don't know what the "transit cliffs" are, but no transit can be viewed from these routes. What is the DB?

I don't know any local climbers :(

For info on local climbing, you may want to try contacting this guy. From this thread on mountain project, he is a local guide and has invested time working with local government on getting areas legally open. I'm sure he can get you some info.

Good advice from Mojo above - check with existing locals - doubly so back East. There's basically no climbable rock in NJ which hasn't already been climbed even if you don't see any chalk on it. Leave it like you found it and someone else can have the same experience you are being afforded.

Since you've been there, this is already a false statement.

You had better read the MP thread referenced above. An active if small climbing community has been shut down by PIPC closures and is trying to negotiate access. Your actions, under the absurd assumption that you're the only person who has laid eyes on this formation, could help to screw the pooch.

Boy, that's a long thread. Keep me up to date with things - I teach at Ramapo College and would love to climb there. Also let me know if there's anything I can do to help. I may have some connections through the college, but not sure if they'd be of any use.

If it hasn't been climbed (*extremely* unlikely), it's not a first ascent - it's an unclimbed potential route.

a little late to the party but I went over there to look. its up above the upper lake? I rappelled that yesterday and it seemed a little easy to climb. allot of rocks at the bottom though. or you might be talking about one on the way up just use a topographical map. me and some friends will head over there. Just don't set bolts or people might hurt themselves. Only rope anchors to trees
