I just bought a house that includes a barn on the property. It's just an old pole barn, but it will be a great place to put up a wall. What is the best use of my space for a work-out/training woody? This is my first build of a wall so I want to get some opinions. I'm going to use one of the horse stalls as the space because the stall ceiling goes from an 8ft. exterior wall up to a 12 ft. ceiling at the center of the barn. I want to first put up a 30degree wall backed up against the exterior 8ft wall, and let it extend upward towards the center. I would also like to install a 1ft. kickplate. This should allow the wall to reach upwards and be about 11 ft in actual wall space (length). The higher the wall, the better, right? I want to know if this is a good use of space and if two future walls (45 degree and 20 degree) would be easily do-able? Where would you position the primary 30 degree wall? Don't go crazy... yes the whole barn could be a woody paradise, but we're just going to build one wall at a time for now. See the attached sketch for the dimensions. Thought? Ideas? Encouragement?

Can you knock out the stall wall and combine two stalls side-by-side? One stall would have too many corners, and that is mostly dead space. I have about the same space as two of your stalls, and i love it. Also, 30 degree is a good place to start. I spend most of my time on my 30 and 40.

thanks Lucky. There is not a wall between the two stalls. There were a couple of boards that separated the stalls, but I took those down, so you can walk freely from stall to stall. I also removed doors from the stalls too. So it's wide open. I'd love to talk and dream about more walls, but for now... Is this wall in a good place? Would I be better to put the main 30 degree wall somewhere else to make a better plan for the future and the corners/dead space that you mentioned?

That will be a great starting point. 10ft wide is nice and your vertical gain is nice as well. I am trying to visualize the end product, but it seems very plausible. WARNING: Expanding is addicting.

Here's the finished product. (cell phone pic) Second wall going just to the right of the existing wall. I'll post better pics once it's all finished. In fact, I'll post pics of the whole process.

Well, things are almost finished with the walls. They are about 90-95% complete and very climbable. 25 degree main wall and a 10 degree perpendicular wall. The carpet that was in the kitchen (ultra nasty) was taken out and put underneath the walls for a little cushion. We're looking for mattresses now. We left room BEHIND the walls to get back in there easily and even a little storage if needed. Top sections and small roof sections will be coming soon... After we get a pad of some type! Any suggestions on where to put a small triangular volume that would make it an interesting and useful training tool for this space? Please see attachments for photos of before/after/and behind!

Thanks. It is solid, but it had to be... poor, sad barn. Any ideas about a volume? Where could a 16-20 inch triangular volume go that would yield the most interesting set up?

I'd say in the center of your steeper wall.
