I'm having a difficult time efficiently browsing through the routes and finding what i'm looking for in the MD/VA/PA area near Frederick.

Can someone give me some knowledge?

I'm looking for some sport climbing areas that would have a few high quality 5.8 to 5.10d level climbs? I'll be taking some noobs, so it's important to have at least one 5.8.

I'm doing a bit of research and some forum browsing; Here's what I've got:

Friction Wall in Elicott City. (mostly 10s, 1 5.9: All sport)

Rifle Cave (Harper's Ferry) : I can't find any info on this

maryland heights (Harper's Ferry) Looks like mostly 2 pitch climbs. Probably out of our skill level and is supposed to be Trad but there may be route development to make more sport routes.

Annapolis Rock: South End has some sport. The route database had no Sport climbs listed. It's described as trad or toprope

It's looking like Friction Rock in Ellicott City is where it's at for me!

Dirty Dog at Friction Wall is ~5.6 & a fun climb.

Rifle Cave is above the road, just down from the train tunnel; climbs start at 5.10+.

There are no sport routes at Annapolis Rock that I'm aware of.

There is a single bolted route just above Chestnut Hill Rd where it meets 340 near HF, ~5.8.

I think you're best option would be Balcony Jr along Elk Ridge (also near HF):

Enjoy!

Dirty Dog is actually the bolted route on the right side of the quarry, not the corner.

You might find some shade at Friction Wall, but Elk Ridge will be in the sun all day.

I climbed at Balcony Rocks...As I recall you could walk around and set up TRs all over the face. Some easy stuff to some harder stuff. Certainly not a destination, but, we just happened to be in town. Clmibing was ok.
