Hey folks Coming from Canada, the national parks work a little differently so I'm not entirely sure how to acquire one. I understand we need a permit if we're camping over 3 days, which we are. The New York State Deparment of Conservation website didn't really provide much information on acquring one. Does anyone have more information? Thanks!!

Call the rangers and ask, they're pretty nice folks. In the winter we didnt need a "permit" for a 5 night trip into the backcountry, just had to let the ranger know we were staying that long and sign the register on our way in and out... YMMV Remember that in the summer some of the sites are super popular (Marcy Dam in particular). Because you can't reserve a site and access is very liberal, you may not be able to camp in your desired site. Be flexible with where you want to camp, and know all the sites along your route. See: http://www.cnyhiking.com/AdirondackLeanTos.htm for an awesome list of Lean-To locations Additionally, you can set up in other locations but remember if your camping in an area with no lean to, unless there is a "camp here" disc there is no camping allowed 150 feet from water, road or a trail. Don't forget a bear canister, you can rent them from the Mountaineer if you don't have one. During busy season it's a good idea to reserve it.

Cool! This is starting to sound like we can camp anywhere in the woods minus the resitricted parts. Almost like crown land! whoo hoo! haha. I'll look into crossing the border with bear spray and bear bangers...

If you're responsible about how you store your food, you won't need the bear spray and bear bangers. Focus on getting a canister and keep your food AT LEAST 100ft/30min away from camp. Don't cook near camp either. Don't keep ANY garbage or wrappers in or near camp, and stash toiletries with the food.
