I'm looking for information (access, guide books, camping, etc...) for Spearfish, South Dakota.

They have a pretty good data base on routes in the canyon
here.

You can find info on camping in the National Forest from
this site,

or private campgrounds from
this site, or
this one.

Thanks. I've viewed some of that information. Do either of you have loved or hated walls, routes, campsites, etc...?

Edit: Let's not forget the best place(s) to grab a burger and beer after a hard day of climbing.

The best spots to camp in that area is Hanna Campground or Timon, don't like Rod and Gun to much, but it's an option. I don't care for any private campgrounds, YMMV.

For eating and a beer, bring your own is your best bet, but if you've got plenty of extra change, try Cheyenne Crossing. There about as reasonable as you can get in that part of the hills. You can always run down to Spearfish and try many of the usual fast food places. Your best bet for a beer and a sandwich would be a the Back Porch downtown there.

Most of the routes I've done in the canyon proper are ice routes. I've only done a few rock routes (15 years ago or so). The limestone routes in the canyon have been cleaned of loose stuff and bolted and tend to be on the to hard side for me.

When ya going?

Thanks! I am planning on either going this season (August/September) or next.
