What are some of you and your gyms doing to get people in the door for the first time?

We have several things going here, but always looking for more.

Climbing is almost unheard of, so we have a Clip and Climb. Basically, you come, pay, get clipped in and climb on route. (Like any great attraction, we can even take and print your photos)

Day use like any gym. Includes the "Free intro to climbing" class. Tying in and belaying.

Two week trial membership that includes gear rental.

2 for 1 Friday after 5:00pm

Getting ready to do the Indonesian version of Groupon

Hosted a couple Television shows here about climbing being fun and safe.

What are you doing that works? and what are you doing that doesn't work?

Our gym has run a number of online coupons (Living Social, Groupon, etc.) and it has brought a lot of first-timers in the door.

That being said, only a very small percentage of those folks will actually get hooked and come back more than once or twice a year.

Our gym has a robust children's program and climbing teams for kids ages 8 and up. Many of the parents start climbing when they have to hang around and wait for their kids.

Also, they have a free women's climb to get women interested in climbing.

A couple of "reality" shows have been filmed at the gym. Also, they get good press with the local newspapers. Try to place articles in the newspapers.

We do a Climbing 101 class. the class is a 2 hour overview of types of climbing, grades, explanation of gear and it comes with a three week membership. We also teach top rope belay in the class. We set it up by appointment, one on one or with a group of friends.

Many gyms here use Meetup http://www.meetup.com. Some offer a reduced price and/free for the first time you attend. Folks are encouraged to take the intro class if they want to keep coming. Many do, and then they are regulars as well as belayers for newbies in future meetups. People come, then they want to bring friends and make it a social occaison. Its been wildly successful for some gyms, with multiple weekly meetups, others it seems to fall flat or attract only people who were coming anyway or those who come one time for a lark and never again.

$99 for three months, 2-3 free guest per month, easy on charging guest for shoes and harness etc, I was hooked for 10 years and brought a lot of people to local gym in return.

Basically offering stuff but benefiting long term cause climbers are cheap and you make your money by having many members, offering BD party and company team building climbing passes etc
