with gear like that it all comes down to fit and comfort. Some brands will work better for different foot/body shapes and sizes, but every piece of gear is slightly different in some way, so try stuff on, experiment, and find out what works best for you.

for beginners, the shoe tarantula by la sportiva is a really good choice and the harness momentum by black diamond is good. Those are what i started with and they work really well. The shoes are comfortable and won't make your toes hurt as much as other shoes and will work fine for you until you get into higher level bouldering.

Meh on the tarantulas... they're made in china People will tell you to buy what they bought because it validates their choices. Make your own. First things first, take a lesson, be it in a gym or with a guide - get a feel for it and see if you actually dig it before you go dropping wads of cash on gear. Once you're ready to blow about (+/-) $100, head to your local gear store and try on a few pairs of climbing shoes. Stay away from anything super-advanced (expensive). They should be super-snug <-- see how I said "snug" and not "tight"? You should be walking the line of uncomfortable but never straying into painful territory... and if you don't know the difference between uncomfortable and painful, you're a pussy and probably shouldnt be climbing. Keep in Mind that your first pair of climbing shoes won't be perfect, and definitely won't last forever. No matter how many hours you spend being indecisive, walking laps around the store, complaining that your toes are touching the end, or asking if they come in a different colour, you're still too clueless to appreciate what you really need to know about the shoes, how to size them, care for them or use them in a way that will make them last. Now that you have shoes, you can consider a harness. A well-taken-care-of harness can last a few years (3-5 by the book) so don't go too cheap and buy some piece of shit that costs $20 and looks like a seat belt with ugly buckles. Try on a few, splurge for the speed-adjust buckles (they make you feel fancy), try to make sure that the harness fits in a way that the buckle is on or near the other end of the harness; to put it simply, reach your hand around to your ass-crack, walk your fingers up to the harness and you should be finding the "centre" of the harness, you may feel a haul loop there or a buckle attaching the elastics that keep your leg loops up. And remember, we're all about saving money, dirtbags need to keep the cash for things like beanies and PBR, but don't be a dick by going to the local shop to size everything and then buying online to save yourself $5. Buy from the little guy, support local business, it's likely they help climbing access in your neighbourhood.
