New Five Ten shoes: Toe's pain and skin friction normal?

Guys, I am about 2 months into wall climbing. I loved it very much. My belayer keep showing harder and harder route to go. (3 times a week, top rope 30" Gym rock). I am in love with Rock Climbing.

I just bought my first shoe, got a Five Ten Team for a good deal 50% off. My feet normally fit size 10 or 10.5, so I order the size 10 and ir couldn't fit my feet at all.

I finally settle with size 12. It fit nicely, except it brings pain to my toe knuckles, and I had to take it off after two climbs or so. Yesterday, the toe next to my big toe got too many friction, part of skin got peeled and bleeds a little.

My questions is: Is it normal? Should I get a different shoe? the Five Ten Anazazi VCS maybe? or Evolv Shaman?

I like this one because it looks nice, fit good, and I got it for 50%off.

Let me know what you think.

Loving Rock Climbing.

No, bleeding from your toes is not normal.

Sounds like you got the wrong kind of shoe. 5.10 Team is an aggressive, high performance shoe and as someone just starting out your feet aren't ready for something like that yet.

Best to scale it back a bit and get something a little more flat (not downturned) and comfortable.

Thanks 4 the advice. I really like the Five Ten shoes actually. It feels like I have 4 hands, and I can climb harder route and cruxes easier w these shoes.

I did read that most people normally went through some toe's painful moment before the shoes and the toes adjusted themselves.

I'll look around for a more comfortable shoes in the mean time. Any recommendations then? I heard Moccacino is an extremely comfortable shoes.

How about Approach shoes? Like Adidas Terrex Solo? Will Approach shoes be any good for bouldering, wall, and overhanging problem?

There are plenty of great shoes out there. Find a pair that doesn't make your feet bleed.

Yes... bleeding is normal, and often expected.

And yes, the Mochaccinos are sublime. I especially like mine with whipped cream on top, makes my feet feel decadent.

Thx Kartesa.

Mocaccino + few pinches of cinnamon wouldn't hurt. :) There is a new version of that latte called Five Ten Supermocc. Got any experience with them? Are they as sublime as Moccasyn?

I think it doesn't fit well. I wouldn't wear it. Are your toenails trimmed adequately (which doesn't have to be real short, just not long/jagged).

Approach shoes don't offer nearly the performance that real climbing shoes do.

I've selected the relevant info and left it up above...

Obviously you're wrong on all fronts.

Toenails are trimmed. The bleeds occurs where my left big toe touches the other toe. The way the left big toe shaped caused the left big toenails to friction against the other toe side. That is where the skin peeled n bleed. I think a band aid/vaseline will stop the friction problem.

Thx 4 the suggestions.

How much blood are you actually losing? It's really nothing to worry about as long as it's under a pint a day.

I should probably changed the title. It was nothing serious. Just small skin peeling of and bleeds small amount of blood. Not even enough to wet a tissue.

Thx.

Hi All,

It's been more than a month since I used the Five Ten Team. I am pleased to informed that the pain subsided and there is no toe frictions anymore.

I still have to take them off after 2-3 ascends, but I can re-use them again after 1-2 minutes of rest.

Thanks to all for the advice.

Anyway, I went to the stores and tried out Anasazi and Shaman, and I think Shaman fits me best. The Five Ten team is a little too slim for my wide feet (causing some spacing issues on the heel).

This may be the first time I've ever heard of a Five Ten shoe being too narrow.

Oh, it's ascents, not ascends.
