Oh snap! The plort thickens!

Darn, I should be more careful with agar.

15% is plenty. weight that shit more carefully! it's not exactly like trying to measure out 0.4 g of salt.

I don't think you can MAKE 15% Agar.

lol, how long has it been since you poured bacterial plates?

A while... and even longer from scratch. Doesn't everyone use little capsules these days? Smile

But in any case, I still remember that the recipe calls for 15g of bacto agar per liter, and that, my dear dribble, is only 1.5%

fucking decimal places.

my indian labmates laugh at me for not being able to do really simple calculations in my head.

actually, thats sort of a fib. i momentarily forgot that w/v solutions were g/100mL instead of g/L.

Yeah, I figured that much.

Still, doing math in your head is considered over-rated in the US, but is highly valued elsewhere around the world.

I really don't care, except when I have these exasperating conversations with graduate students who come up with nonsense answers and have absolutely no frame of reference to even figure out that their answer is several orders of magnitude off

ouch, dude. and I don't think it's "overrated;" I wish I could do it, but I have never been able to. I can do simple 4 function math in my head if i have to but I mentally write it on a piece of paper in my fucking brain to do so, and it takes a while. For realzies, I picture a pen and everything.

in all fairness, I'm slightly dyslexic. I *can* find the answers to things, but I have to write them out to be sure I do them correctly.

w00t!

I expect Nathan will be crashing on your couch sometime in early January.
well, of course today the company he's leaving, which never gave two shits before about him, suddenly is freaking out he's leaving and is compiling a 'strong counter offer'.

Mother fracker.

I was asked when I was leaving my contract position for my full time position what it would take for them to keep me.

The number I came up with to make it worthwhile was so outrageous I couldn't even ask for it.
Yeah, he threw out a number that was like 15k more than the CO jorb, and the guy goes 'I think I can make that happen!'

I think we're still moving, but oy.

bidding war!
I mean, if they can make the high number, we're staying, and even if it's only for another six months we'd sack away the cash/pay off some student or car loans, then we can move to someplace that's not Denver. I could do Portland, or Bellingham.

LOL. You're so excited to get to milk and honey you can't wait to get to the PNW?
Better gardening.

move to jersey.

Ohio has great gardening. that is not a reason to move there, though.

new jersey has great gardening AND seaside heights.

Hey cammy, I've been meaning to ask, how are the MINT wars going? Did the garden survive your absence?

I don't know what i have gotten myself into. Imagine several 20-30 mixed perennial flower beds. Now imagine them overgrown with a tightly matted mix of mint and Bishop's lace. Add a liberal sprinkling of thistles, and weave some brambles through the whole thing.

That would be my garden.

I have been weeding every day. So far, I have uncovered 5 rose bushes, three peonies, a bunch of hostas, irises, and lilies.

I feel like a must weed BEFORE I can put on the weedkiller, because if I spray the whole thing the weeds will just laugh at me.

I wonder if this garden is salvageable?

Is Bishop's Lace the same as Bishop's Weed or Gout Weed? If so, that stuff is a pain in the ass, but we managed to get rid of it (though I did find a couple of springs this spring).

What I don't know what to do about is the Bind Weed. It's all through the neighbour's front lawn which means it's in my sidelawn. It hasn't made the jump over to the driveway so I haven't bothered trying to erradicate.

Rototiller. Remove plant matter. Plant cover crop. Try again next spring.

Yeah, that might be the ultimate path.

The thing is though, these are mixed flower/shrub beds, and the shrubs (lilacs, rhododendrons, and some others that i don't know the names for but that looked really pretty when in bloom) are big and beautiful.

It would be hard to pull them out, and expensive to replace them. So I am trying to save them, and I figured, if i am saving them, I will try to save the peonies and some other smaller perennials, too.

If it's the same plant I'm thinking of rototilling won't work. You either need to slowly kill it with persistant weeking or cover the entire area for a couple of years to kill it off.

Google images tells me that Bishop's Lace and Bishop's Weed are totally different plants.

I think we used to call Bishop's Lace Queen Anne's Lace, I used to pick it for my grandmother.

I misspoke, it is Bishop's weed, and it is my least favorite plant in the world, aside from bindweed. So you have my sympathies, and yes, I would be killing it for a few years, I am sure.

Gerks are pathetic!

I was just out climbing... It was as perfect a weekend as you could hope for, in August, temps in the 70s, and partly cloudy.

This was the opposite of camhead's partner bailing sadness. I thought I was going to make a solo trip to the New, to climb with Joe and some friends who just moved to Fayetteville.

But then I got a last-minute call for partners from Ben who just got back in town after a summer traveling out West, and then couple other folks that he knew joined us, which made the drive much more pleasant.

I think clamheads will enjoy meeting Ben, who is pretty much a 30yo version of coloradkid, and Sarah, who is super psyched on trad and has climbed extensively in Yosemite.

Joe and the 4 of us climbed together on Saturday, more or less. Joe and I broke off from the group of 3 to do more of a mileage day, if you can call 10 pitches mileage. Still, 10 pitches each of 5.10a-5.12b was not a bad day. Joe sent everything, I hung on harder stuff, but oh well.

Sunday was a bigger group with some more friends of Joe's from NC. We went to the Beauty Mt. Good times! Dribble, I would be very curious to see how you did the crux on Mensa!

So my Nova Scotia report.

1) 5 days was more than enough to spend with family.
2) I went to the beach.
3) I saw a parade.
4) My father makes me crazy (beyond the normal family craziness).
5) My aunt is a fucking mess.
6) I need more sleep.

So it was Judique on the Floor days (whatever that means), Judique being the town that my mother is from. This means that I got to see a large number of my aunts and uncles, which is really nice but as nice as it was it was also very busy (ie - not a very restful vacation). This also meant I got to see a small town parade, which mostly consisted of people sitting in the backs of cars with funny hats on, but they did throw candy.

Anyway, the aunt. I have this aunt who slipped on the stairs last winter and broke her arm, etc. Anyway, it she's addicted to pain killers (and was before the stair thing) and is a loon. So I show up at the house and she has this massive nasty cut on the side of this face all stiched up (like 4 inches long, had to have had 15+ stiches). She fell out of bed and was pretty much looking for sympathy everytime I talked to her. Resulted in much avoidence.

And I think my father is trying to kill himself. He was diagnosed as being diabetic a few years ago and still runs to the store for a breakfast of pop and chocolate. So this in itself is upsetting, but everytime you bring up the fact he shouldn't be drinking so much beer (3-5 bottles some days) he gets all angry and pissy at you. He's gotten in such a consistant bad mood that when I started analysing the sensors on his newish fancy Lexus he took it as an offense, something about how I always question the things he says or something.

So anyway, end result is that I went out there on Tuesday night, slept in a pile of uncomfortable bed. My flight back to Ontario left at 5:40am NS time, meaning I needed to get up at ~4am....which is 3am Ontario time. Came right to work after and I'm a mess.

Oh yeah, and the beach....I swam in salt water and we ate some watermelon. I got a sand dollar but I think I left it at my parents. Frown
