Xiao He, Lie Feng, and Wu Xiang have succeeded in ascending Mt. Pomiu, China via a new route (The Western, VI, 1400m, 5.10a) in late July.
“It was a tormenting 52 hours, but also an enjoyable 52 hours.” These were Xiao He’s words after the trio finally made it back safely.
The expedition to Mt. Pomiu (5413m) was hit by various calamities, starting off with one of the guides accidentally fell into a treacherous river. The team then had to contend with rain and sleet before finally making the ascent on July 29, via a new route on the west face and the south-western ridge.
However, water that they hauled up the mountain had been spilled. What was more disastrous was Xiao He’s left leg had been hit by a loose rock during the descent, leaving him with only partial mobility. After Lie Feng took over the lead, the trio continued through the western edge of south face which was made up with newly formed rocks. The ropes were repeatedly caught in the cracks and creating great difficulties. It took the trio one extra day to finally make the descent.
This climb illustrates once again that sometimes it is the descent that is the harder part. Rare footage captures the entire climb and is now available on Youtube in Chinese with English subtitles.
