There are pros and cons to all of your options. Here are the gyms in NY itself: Brooklyn Boulders. Pros: most terrain, decent route setting; Cons: if you're in Manhattan it may be a trek, short walls for roped climbing, VERY crowded, hipsters everywhere. Manhattan Plaza Health Club. Pros: in Manhattan; Cons: tiny - bouldering is barely ok, don't even bother with the roped climbing. Chelsea Piers Pros: It's been a while since I was last there, but they did have the best lead climbing in the city. Cons: Ri-god-damned-diculously expensive. The Sports Club/LA Pros: It's a nice club, I suppose. Cons: Climbing isn't really a focus - there is a small wall with perhaps half a dozen top-roped routes. In order to use it you must be a member, and membership is expensive. NYC Outward Bound Wall Pros: I haven't been, so someone else may have to chime in here. It's supposed to be the tallest wall in the city. Cons: It's in Queens. There is also the City Climber's Club gym which is, I believe, still closed for renovation. It's been closed for a while, though, and I'm not sure when they intend to reopen. If ever they do, it is (was?) a small space, but with a great and dedicated group of regular climbers. If you have a car, you can also take the odd trip to The Rock Club in New Rochelle, or The Cliffs at Valhalla in Valhalla, NY. The latter is the club opening the gym in Long Island City that was linked to (above). In my opinion, The Rock Club is the best of them, but it's also one of the farthest away. It makes a post-work session a near impossibility. When I lived in the city, I used to make the odd trip up there until Brooklyn Boulders opened, after that, I spent all my indoor time there. I lived a 10 minute walk from it, though, and I wonder how I would have felt about it if I had to commute for an hour to get there... Hope this blathering helps - and whatever you do, don't let NYC fence you in: the Gunks are gorgeous, and never as far away as they feel. J
