My friends and I wanted to take a trip to Yosemite to hike and climb.

We are fairly new to rock climbing and have limited gear

Can we top rope in Yosemite?

Are there easy routes to get up "sport climbs" that we can then top rope from?

At the risk of being called unimaginative, Swan Slabs (http://www.rockclimbing.com/...Swan_Slab/Swan_Slab/) is quite good for toproping, although there's no easy top access so you have to be able to lead / solo a route to set an anchor. Swan Slab Chimney is fine to solo until the final crack section before the anchors (not too hard, but exposed - take a couple of cams for that bit and maybe one or two to backup the suffering slung tree as well). From there it's a straight shot to TR Grant's Crack (5.9) and Goat For It (5.10a), which are both nice.

There's also an obvious, major blocky corner ("Swan Slab Gully", I think?) further right that has a pretty cruisy first pitch (maybe 5.6?) and that ends at a big ledge. From there you can set a variety of anchors (again take cams - there are no bolts) above the slabs and arete to the right of the corner, and an easy crack around past the arete ("Hanging Flake", I think?). It might also be possible to TR the nice looking flake to the left (facing the cliff) of the corner, although I suspect some directionals would be needed near the top (I haven't done that one myself).

Have fun and be careful - that area sees a lot of traffic, so it's quite worn and slippery in places.

Cheers,
Peter
