Ice Screw Sharpening

All Ice Climbers
I'm sharpening ice screws with an aggressive tooth profile. I can also convert your old style BD's to new style. Grivel, Petzl, Omega and DMM can also be sharpened to an aggressive tooth profile.
A 4-axis CNC milling machine is used and the results are fantastic. The screws come out very sharp.
Twice a year, I collect all screws by a certain date and then run them all off as a single batch run. I keep everyone's screws separate of coarse
It's too expensive to run a CNC machine for a dozen screws so this is the only way to keep costs down.

Next Batch Run: APRIL 27 2012

Super Stubbies too.

I have been sharpening screws now for the public for a year now and 3 years for myself.

Are you telling me you can't figure it out on your own.
I'm on rev9.1 now. There was a whole bunch of fiddling with the angles and different endmills to get the desired undercuts and face angles.
But the program below will cut 4 teeth on a screw

Can you figure out how I'm holding the part. Most importantly how I'm able to clamp every screw with the teeth orientated on exactly the same A and X axis? Without spending 10 minutes to calibrate the geometry offsets for each and every screw. That's the hard part actually, not that the program was easy to polish.

Program for a 4 axis milling center. A-Axis rotates around the X-Axis

Not sure why anybody would send their ice screws away to be sharpened. I bought one of those petzal ice screw sharpners. Takes about 2 minutes to to turn a dull BD screw into a razor sharp ice killer. I've only been sharpening my own screws for 20+ yrs before you start slagging me.

Because the Lim'ice doesn't produce the same angles as found on the newest screws. It can reproduce angles similar to the older style BD's. The Grivel sharpening machine doesn't sharpen to the newer angles either.

I think most will agree that the newer aggressive teeth start way better than the older shallower ones.
