I've gone bouldering at night before in the summer. Pretty simple. A headlamp and a few flashlights will do. But what about at the crag? Anyone have any suggestions on powerful, portable, and battery-powered flood lights to light up the walls?
After-work climbing is getting cut short now that the sun is setting earlier.

Head lamp is all you need. Look in front of you handhods are plenty visable. Look down and any feature for your feet are lit up.
I would think that a flood lamp is a stupid idea, I would immagine that your shadow would obscure your progress. plus you mosty likly would run out of battery power before you got more than a rout or two in...

I have never climbed at night but I do alot of fishing at night and we never had any luck with standard battery flood lights...the batter is dead within a hour or two and the light gets very dim after about 20 minutes. We started using lights that ran off plug ins and just stripped the wires and twist them around a car battery post and wamo...your rocking for longer than any sesh your fingers could handle.

i climb at night pretty regularly. i just have a $30 black diamond head lamp and it works for me. i mostly do top ropes at night just playing around, but i've done some multi pitch trad as well. if i lived in a sport climbing area then i would lead at night more, but with trad it gets trickier.
also if you are fortunate enough to have some campsites with fire pits right in front of a crag then build the fire big. still use a head lamp too though. if you can afford one of the really awesome headlamps then go that route because they are pretty damn bright compared to the cheaper ones, but the cheap ones still work fine usually.

Yeah headlamp is all you need. Heard about 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell? Climbing competition going on for 24 hours straight. Lots of headlamp action, with a few floodlights.

Yeah I was a little worried about the shadow the flood lights would cast. Battery life-time would be the biggest issue. Thanks for the insights guys!

It is a bit bulky and heavy, not really meant for climbing, but is INSANELY bright and was free.
