We usually go every year, alas, Mitch's wrist requires surgery. We will likley skip 2012 in EPC.

Anyone going?

Wonder what's going on down there. Ed? You out there? Can you tell us about conditions in the Potrero?

I was there last year (well, March 2012), and about 3 years before that. Probably won't go this year, unless I get an offer I can't refuse.

Going there for a week over Christmas/New Years. Will be my first trip so I'm super excited. A friend of mine recently moved to Monterrey and she's been going to Potrero nearly every weekend this month. Should be a good trip.

I'm going in march. Also a first timer. I am trying to get back into shape. Between moving to the northeast and losing my car, my days outside have plummeted.

Had some friends go last week. You can see some pictures of them on Dope Ninja and a group shot on Ed's blog...

Tami and I spent the whole summer here this year and everything has been quiet and peaceful. We've had a lot fewer visitors these last two years than normal but those who have come have had a fabulous time and new route activity has been brisk. If you haven't been down for a while or are considering your first trip rest assured that everything here is tranquilo.

You might have problems in certain parts of Monterrey but everything in the Potrero is very peaceful.

I have friends that just came back from Potrero (the Houston Gang in Ed's blog).

They took a bus service from Houston To Monterey and they said the whole trip down there was completely cool with no sign of trouble whatsoever.

question:

the ticket from the northeast to mexico is more than twice the cost of the ticket to austin, a city I like anyway. Is it worth it to take the flight all the way to mexico, or is the drive easy enough from austin down there?

curious.

It's an 'easy" 8 hour drive from Austin to the Potrero but you would have to deal with the border crossing, getting the right permits etc. A lot of people fly to San Antonio or Laredo and take the bus from there.

sorry if this is ridiculous or overly covered - what permits are required? Our issue is that we're potentially coming with a group of 5, which makes a rental car seem like the more logical answer over 5 bus tickets each way or 5 flights at double the cost into mexico.

we might just suck it up and buy the tickets directly into mexico though.

robx, If I were you I'd pay the extra and fly into Monterrey and take my shuttle to the Potrero. Otherwise you'll eat up two days of your vacation with the driving and border crossing. Once you're here, you don't need a vehicle as everything is within easy walking distance.

I'm not quite sure how it works with a rental car other than it is doable. If you bring your own car you have to have the title, and a certified letter from any lienholder. The permit for the car costs 50 usd and you have to post a deposit (200-400 usd) which is refunded when you cancel the permit upon leaving the country. You also have to pay around 20 bucks for your personal tourist permit (which is free if you fly).

You may find that you are not permitted to take a rental car into Mexico. I've often seen such restrictions.

Also, if you do take a vehicle across, you probably need Mexico-specific insurance, though this can (as I understand it) be gotten at the border as you enter Mexico.
