I have completely quit climbing though. Getting bored and out of shape.

3/4's of the way thru John Irving's The Hotel New Hampshire.

First book of his that I've read. Pretty good stuff so far. Every time he teeters near the edge of absurdity, he manages to recover just in time and often to remarkable effect. He is a master of his particular craft. Thats for sure.

apparently the french buy art in november like americans celebrate thanksgiving, except they do it more often.

hello ebay.fr

not sure if anything will work, but i've met an artist-friend here who is from france, and he's been giving me a shit ton of secrets about selling in France. my focus after this weekend is to get a bunch of A4-size paintings done for sale there.

He taught me some other stuff, too that may help to get my name out there. We'll see, but I think it might work.

Also, he and I are now planning a joint exhibit next year (march or so). Things could work out after all.

Just finished reading Plath's Ariel for the first time since highschool. I enjoyed it much more back then.

They are mostly a pleasure to read with respect to the language and structure and they elicit an emotional (proly what I was responding to in my angsty youth) response but they tend to be so cryptic and personal that their actual meaning is often vague or indecipherable.

Elm is an especially elegant classic.

Elm

I know the bottom, she says. I know it with my great tap root:
It is what you fear.
I do not fear it: I have been there.

Is it the sea you hear in me,
Its dissatisfactions?
Or the voice of nothing, that was your madness?

Love is a shadow.
How you lie and cry after it
Listen: these are its hooves: it has gone off, like a horse.

All night I shall gallop thus, impetuously,
Till your head is a stone, your pillow a little turf,
Echoing, echoing.

Or shall I bring you the sound of poisons?
This is rain now, this big hush.
And this is the fruit of it: tin-white, like arsenic.

I have suffered the atrocity of sunsets.
Scorched to the root
My red filaments burn and stand, a hand of wires.

Now I break up in pieces that fly about like clubs.
A wind of such violence
Will tolerate no bystanding: I must shriek.

The moon, also, is merciless: she would drag me
Cruelly, being barren.
Her radiance scathes me. Or perhaps I have caught her.

I let her go. I let her go
Diminished and flat, as after radical surgery.
How your bad dreams possess and endow me.

I am inhabited by a cry.
Nightly it flaps out
Looking, with its hooks, for something to love.

I am terrified by this dark thing
That sleeps in me;
All day I feel its soft, feathery turnings, its malignity.

Clouds pass and disperse.
Are those the faces of love, those pale irretrievables?
Is it for such I agitate my heart?

I am incapable of more knowledge.
What is this, this face
So murderous in its strangle of branches? -

Its snaky acids hiss.
It petrifies the will. These are the isolate, slow faults
That kill, that kill, that kill.

Apprehensions is also a personal favorite. It's not in Ariel but worth posting.

There is this white wall, above which the sky creates itself --
Infinite, green, utterly untouchable.
Angels swim in it, and the stars, in indifference also.
They are my medium.
The sun dissolves on this wall, bleeding its lights.

A grey wall now, clawed and bloody.
Is there no way out of the mind?
Steps at my back spiral into a well.
There are no trees or birds in this world,
...There is only sourness.

This red wall winces continually:
A red fist, opening and closing,
Two grey, papery bags --
This is what i am made of, this, and a terror
Of being wheeled off under crosses and rain of pieties.

On a black wall, unidentifiable birds
Swivel their heads and cry.
There is no talk of immorality amoun these!
Cold blanks approach us:
They move in a hurry.

For that better part of the past 8 years I've maintained two harnesses for use. A few months ago, my primary outdoor harness almost blew through the leg loop arch tie in and was wearing hard on the swami-belt tie in point and I had no choice but to retire it. It had lasted two years. My other harness, at 8 years is beyond what many consider a safe age for nylon or plastic goods. I've been using it this summer in hopes to find the right replacement as I'm picky when it comes to harnesses.

Long story short, I've retired two harnesses already this year. My main outdoor harness, my backup harness that was getting old and showing signs of wear, and my "alpine" harness that, frankly, had run it's course through history and is no longer useful.

My new harness showed up in the mail yesterday. I'm stoked. Hopefully I don't blow through it too quick. Also, I'm trying a new brand; so I'lll see how it goes. I've been a Pretzl person when it comes to harnesses. Hopefully Arcteryx is nice to me.

Umm, yeah. If you almost blew thru the tie-in point, you waited too long. But then you already knew that...Unimpressed
