I've just started sport leading and love it! Rumney is amazing but I'm looking for something closer for day trips from Brooklyn. Does anyone have suggestion for sport areas within a few hours of NYC- any direction works. Many Thanks ;)

There isn't much. Probably the most notable, and legally accessible, are: NY: Poison Ivy wall PA: Birdsboro and Safe Harbor

Thanks for the info!!! I was hoping that there was some big amazing wall near NYC that I hadn't heard of yet. Confused by the note by Ensonik??? Not sure if it was directed at me or who? Its hard to follow as I'm new here. Needless to say I'm ignoring it. I'd rather spend my free time climbing rather than checking grammar on a climbing forum. Bless.

Well, there are, but not really "near" NYC other than in the most relative sense (meaning they're closer than those in Colorado or California) and they're definitely not sport - Cannon, Cathedral, Whitehorse in NH, Wallface, Pok-O-Moonshine and others in the Daks, etc.

The thing that makes NYC SO awesome, from a climbing perspective....is that it is pretty easy to get to the airport, get on a plane and get to any climbing destination with a fair amount of ease(in comparison to living near smaller towns). Red Rock would be one example. Get on a Red Eye out of JFK on Friday night to land in the morning in Las Vegas. Rent a car(Vegas has a very easy airport to car rental hub) and then you just minutes from some fantastic sport climbing. Climb Saturday and Sunday, and red eye back to NY. Voila!

Voila! as a nyc transplant, I love this idea, but the likelihood of me (a teacher) being able to afford trips like this is very very slim. I've been to the gunks a few times, rumney, and I'm going to potrero in march. Not having a car in the city has made trips very very hard to arrange. On that note: ANYONE that is leaving the city to climb, ANYWHERE for a weekend, please let me tag along.

As you've heard (er.. read) here, the rocks close to NYC aren't big, and they're generally not sport climbing. The big stuff in the NE isn't close to NYC and for the most part isn't sport either. One destination to put on your list however, - it's doable in a long day from NYC but really lends itself to a weekend - is Snowy Mt. It's about 4.5 hr from NYC and the approach is about 2 hrs on a trail. But you get a day's worth of real sport climbing from 5.7 to 5.10+ on routes that get to 200 ft or so. The cliff faces south so it may be warm enough in early spring and late fall, but it's at 3800 ft elev. so figure on it being 10-15 degrees cooler than the big upstate towns that you'll find weather forecasts for e.g. Lake George.

All of the answers you're getting, along with the crappy NE weather, are significant reasons that I moved away from there.
