I am new to Sport routes and am looking for a really good Rope. Looking for suggestions. Good standard length? Thickness? Brand?

1. 9.8 to 10.3 mm for toughness since yr new

2. get something fairly cheap, dont bother with $$$$ ropes

3. you dont need bi-color, dry treatments or other fancy stuff at this point

4. if you find a good deal get a 70m, but a 60m may be fine depending on yr area and if its on a sick sale ... with enough sport whippers you may chop the rope anyways and a 70m becomes a 60m

5. if yr using a gri gri or other assisted locking device, something that is supple and stays supple maybe advantageous for easier feeding ... but that doesnt mean you need to spend $$$$

in short, for your first rope buy something cheap, simple and durable since youll destroy it ... dont spend $$$$ on fancy ropes that wont make you climb any better at this point ... and spend the saved money on going out climbing which will make you better

Anything but Petzl.

Go as inexpensive as you can find. Because you're new you'll trash your rope quickly.

60 or 70 meters, depends on where you are climbing, ask around the local crags.

Thickness?

10.2mm - 10.5mm, again, you're new so a thicker rope will last longer.

Brand?

As I mentioned above, anything but Petzl.

Definitely lean towards thicker vs thinner.

And as mentioned above, just go for the best deal, you can be more picky when you buy your second rope.

IMO, the best handling ropes are the single braided ones (instead of dual braid).

60M, whatever is on the cheapest, around 10mm. Look at GearExpress.com in their sale section and at a few of the other discount internet retailers. You should be able to find something around $130. There are even cheaper deals if you look hard and are patient.
