yeah, with heavy hinting like that, you could have just answered the question. Tongue

yes, kamhed's hint led me to make a guess that turned owt to be kerect once I checked wiki. I wonder if the gnus media hear will make note of it in five years.

If the next apocalypse prediction doesn't come true, I guess we would still be around to find out in 5 years, won't we?

It is one of those weird things... imagine for a second that 30 years down the road nobody knows what 4th of July is anymore, and those who know simply forget about it. It is not a holiday anymore, just another hot summer day... oh wait, it is 4th of July! It is THAT dramatic of a change, KWIM? Something that I couldn't have imagined 30 years ago.
Ok. I give up. What is it.

oh, swete jebus ...

I didn't know after just reading lena's original question (lena, I'm curious, 25 years ago would you (or an adult version of yourself) have taken any note of July 4th?), but at this point it should be pretty obvious what to look for.

Sigh, 'biner!

November 7th this year marks the 95th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution. For the reasons why October revolution is dated to November, read up on the difference between Julian and Gregorian calendars.

And yeah, snoop. 25 years ago I was in high school. I had to participate in the mandatory parade to celebrate the anniversary. Tongue

oh, did you go to high school in the US? I had thought you came over after college.

I meant that when july 4th rolled around, did the average person in the USSR think "hey, today is american independence day", or was it just another day, much as november 7th doesn't really correlate to any sort of important anniversary that i would note?

Oh, now you are all confused. I did come here after college. And i didn't mean to say that 4th of July was a big deal in USSR. Not at all, though people there did know about it, I would say definitely more than people here know about world history in general.

But November 7th was an official holiday, and now it is not a holiday anymore. So it would be like US evolving into a situation where 4th of July is not a holiday anymore. What I was saying is that 25 years ago, I couldn't imagine that November 7th would not be a holiday for Soviets in the future, just like it seems impossible to imagine that 4th of July will stop being an American holiday. Got it now?

I don't know how many people would care if the 4th of July was no longer a holiday as long as they still got that day off sometime in the summer.

Oh yeah, I forgot. As long as you have a day off, it doesn't actually matter that the country you were born in no longer exists. Good point.

just so long as the PTFTW exists.

ahh, I think the confusion came from I thought you were saying that you never thought 25 years ago that you'd live in a place where nobody ascribed any meaning to november 7th.

though I am guessing that 25 years ago you did not think you'd be living in cleveland.

no climbings this weke end; more werkz = lame.

on the plus side, heading out to RR next weke end to climb more sandstones.

probibly jtree over thanksgivingz.

I assume that both kamhed and lena are werking their respective projekts at teh gnu and red, and both complaining that it's too warm. well, kamhed has already thrown out the warmth as a pre-emptive excuse on a minimum of two internetz forums, and I'm just guessing that it'll be a bit smarmy at the solar collector.

We watched cloud atlas the other night. Th one by the matrix directors. Was super good, complex parallel story lines, same actors showing up in them all.

I was wondering about Cloud Atlas after seeing some mixed reviews. Seems like the kind of movie I would really dig so it's nice to hear you liked it.

Also, was the "yellow face" as bad as Yahoo News was making it out?

Got outside for the first time since Labor Day. But seriously, dremel is one of the best off-the-couchers that I know.

On the drive down, for some reason we wound up having to explain [oldskool]m34tb0mbz[/oldskool] to our friends who were riding with us. Pulled up some old BET on the iyup, relived our old gloriez. Pretty rad.

they had all the actors playing several different races and genders, including white actors playing asians and at least one asian playing a white woman and hugo weaving playing a woman and halle berry playing a man. it was all mixed up all over the place; i thought it was cool.
