Spencer Bean, an experienced rock climber, took to the climbing wall at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center late last week something friends say he does several times a week. But on this climb, the University of Iowa senior somehow fell 30-40 feet, almost leaving him paralyzed by the impact.

Bean, described by his brother as an experienced climber, reportedly fell from the wall on the night of Nov. 8. Though details of the exact nature of the incident are still unclear, he was rushed to UI Hospitals & Clinics in critical condition and has since undergone an eight-hour surgery.

I went to school with a guy with the same name. Doubt it's him, but fingers are crossed anyway.

Long way to fall. Hope the guy recovers well. Thoughts are with him.

I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Experienced climber in our gym forgot to tie his knot and decked from the top as he was ready to be lowered. He had a very severe ankle injury, but, has since (mostly) recovered.

Best wishes to Spencer Bean in his healing and recovery.

Spencer,

I don't know you, or if I do it's in passing at the rec center, or perhaps out at the crag.

You are, however, a brother climber and I'm praying for your full recovery and hope that if it is your desire that you can resume your pursuit of climbing adventure be it indoors or out. You have youth on your side to speed recovery, and your reported positive attitude will also be a huge benefit in the process. I believe in the power of prayer and perseverance as well as luck and miracles. You are most fortunate to have been so close to world-class medical attention with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics less than a mile away when this happened. I'm guessing that there were several people with medical training who sprang into action and helped to comfort and isolate you to protect your spinal cord. Thank goodness! Thank God!

Sincerely,
--Bill McKirgan
