Hi there. I'm looking for a climbing location in Southern California that has the look of Joshua Tree but isn't within the park boundary. It's too expensive to film inside the park.

This is for a surfing show called "The Breaks" and you'll get to see Amy Paffrath http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2625932/ all harnessed up on the show. Any help will be appreciated.

We're looking for a stair step climb with a flat wall below a flat floor area and then another flat wall to climb on. Got that? So, Wall... flat spot to set up camera and crew and then another wall.

I'll attach some paragraphs from the script to give you a more detailed description. If you've got a good spot please email us at thebreaksshow@gmail.com

Also, looking for a campground with some big flat rocks in view.

Thanks.

EXT. JOSHUA TREE - MID MORNING
CLIMBING GEAR MONTAGE:
Carabiners clank, rope is fed through a figure 8, feet dig
into dirt, a hand goes into a chalk bag.
ROCK LEDGE
Tylerís hand rises into view. It fumbles around the top of
the ledge for a hand hold and finds a small outcropping of
rock. Tylerís head pops up. He winces and heaves his upper
body to the top of the climb.
INTERCUT WITH BOTTOM OF CLIFF
Vanessa belays Tylerís rope.
VANESSA
Good, now swing your leg up!
11.
Tyler crawls to the top of the ledge and looks down
triumphantly.
VANESSA (CONTíD)
Now take the rope and secure it to
the anchor!
Tyler detaches his rope and secures it to an anchor bolt in
the rock.
TYLER
On belay!
Vanessa pulls her rope tight and approaches the wall. She
easily climbs to the top.
On the ledge, Vanessa stands up with her hands on her hips.
She sizes up Tyler and nods.
VANESSA
Good work surfer boy. Almost to the
top. Nowís the fun part.
Vanessa drops the rope from her harness, pats Tylerís
shoulder as she passes him and walks to another flat wall.
She turns back and smiles.
Tyler scans the flat wall. He sees no easy hand holds.
TYLER
That?!? No way. I got my butt
kicked on the bunny slope. Thereís
not even any hand holds on this
one.
VANESSA
Relax. Itís easier than it looks.
This is bouldering. You wonít even
need the rope.
TYLER
No safety net?
Vanessa smiles mischievously and turns to the wall. She rolls
her shoulder and springs up onto the rock. Three steps up she
maneuvers herself to face Tyler with her back against the
wall and anchors her hands and feet making a human obstacle
course.
VANESSA
There. Now thereís hand holds.
Tyler hesitates.
12.
VANESSA (CONTíD)
(smiles)
Trust me.
Tyler shakes his head and tentatively steps forward. He
places one hand on Vanessaís foot and the other behind her
opposite knee. He looks up. Vanessa stares down at him.
Tyler pulls himself off the ground and onto the wall. Vanessa

i can think of a few hidden areas in joshua tree that would be perfect and are in remote locations away from the park, but why would a local want to give up a spot like that to a film company who's only drive is money and doesnt care about the area or the environment? this desert is being destroyed every day because people have no respect for it. the park gets trashed by tourists all year so those couple awesome spots that stay nice outside the park are sacred to the locals. after disney came out and painted over some of the native american pictographs i'm not so keen on film companies.

Hey Knubs,
I can't say I blame you. Not all of us are like that but enough of us are that the rap is deserving. If you've ever been to punchbowls and seen the graffiti up there.... it's enough to make you sick.

Keep the secret spots to yourself. Let me know if you can recommend another place that would work for us.
Cheers,

Zach Block

Lone Pine, Alabama Hills.
The rock is very Josh like, and the area has been the backdrop for a million movies, serials, and commercials. I'm fairly sure the local community still likes to have the movie industry, and the resultant economy, come through.
But for a particular formation within the Hills that matches your criteria, nothing comes to mind. Perhaps the local gear shop there would be of service.
