if you dont know the grades of the routes youre climbing ... you either totally badass ... or so new that you dont need those fancy stiff $$$$$ downturned shoes

 definitely not "BA" as you put it. I have just heard about those grades and was curious what ratings are what. In all honesty you are probably right(I am really new to climbing, but I have family in Ohio that are really into it) that I don't need really downturned shoes yet but I'm trying them at least can always return. I take good care of things I buy and don't spend too often. I know climbing shoes are different though if my technique is bad & beginner-ish...

Several problems here. All the following is meant to be helpful.
1) As mentioned before, try before you buy. The reason the online store is giving a lower price is because they are not paying for retail space or staff so you can try them. Trying them on somewhere then buying them online is stealing, you got the help, pay the price. Ps. the better a shoe fits, the stiffer it may seem because there is less slop in the fit. Few shoes (ie TC Pro) are stiff enough to counteract a poor fit.
2) Your old shoes are not bad or low performing. Some of the hardest climbs I've done (not telling grades, irrelevant) and that others have done (someone mentioned Sharma and mocasyms) were in relatively basic flat toed shoes. The key is we have strong feet, and a soft shoe gives us sensitivity on small holds. Also, a soft shoe instantly becomes downturned when you curl your toes, then back to flat for a smear one move later. My prediction is since you brought your first pair, your pain threshold has gone up and you can now wear a more snug size or model. Try a bunch on in a store, be nice to the sales people, and buy one.

I don't have a store I can just go try the models I'm looking at nearby, which I understand is the best to do for finding model and sizing. I'm saying the online store pays for free exchange(sizing) or return(not the right fit) shipping, and as a bonus it's cheaper.
I bought my first shoes very tight. I don't think I could even go a half size down without too much pain. I have a very small amount of big toe pain after climbing a long time with my Reflexes. I think they are sized perfect. They are sensitive and I like that I can feel the plastic under my feet well, but I'm also willing to try something stiffer. The rubber just seems to suck compared what I have a heard about how good Stealth C4 & Onyxx and Vibram XS Grip 2 & Edge all are. I hope my pain threshold has gone up.

Try them on - those two shoes have tremendously different fit.
I couldn't wear the Feroces, the toe is too low profile, and also fairly stiff, and hurt like hell.
The toe on the Solutions is pretty soft.
Size wise I can offer a size comparison on my foot of the Sportiva Miura VS (42) vs the Scarpa Vapor V (42.5) for whatever that's worth.

That sounds really similar to what I wear. I think I would be about a 9.0 in the Muira VS just guessing. What size(s) did you try on in the Feroces? I ordered a 9.0, so we'll see if they fit and all when I get them next next week(ships the 22nd...)If you don't remember that 's fine... Thanks for your insight!

It's all good; thanks for your help. I already ordered some shoes to try on. We'll see if they fit... otherwise I'll just bump up a half-size unless they aren't the right 'fit'. Then I can return them.
