Will be driving right past Joshua Tree on the way to Thanksgiving dinner and will have our 15-year old dog with us. We would love to stop for half a day or so and climb but am crystal clear that dogs are really not welcome in the park. Anyone have a recommended climb that's not in the park proper? Appreciate the help!

There are quite a few routes in JTree that are close enough to the road, picnic, or campgrounds that climbing with a dog is perfectly legit. They do tend to be more crowded areas, but they are also some of the most convenient if you are just going to be there for half a day. It will likely not be an inconvenience for you. My wife and I take our dog all the time and it is no problem.

It is quite common to see dogs at areas more than 100 yards (or 100 ft or whatever the distance is) away from the road, but this is a violation of NPS rules at JTree.

Well that's not entirely true. Dogs just are not a good idea out here. You can get away with it, but it's not advisable. Even on leash, dogs mark their territory and this can cause the local critters to shy away from areas they would normally call home and look for food.

Places that are ok would be Trash Can, ATPA Rock, Left Hand of Darkness, Turtle Rock, Intersection, some places in the camping loops of Hidden Valley. Same goes for Ryan, Bell and White Tank.

Certainly lots of climbing options there.

It's your call to run under the radar.

Enjoy your trip!

EDIT:

There is also Section Six, but there's no real topo's available.

Isn't there someone local who doesn't mind dog-sitting for these folks for a few hours? We should try to help them out so they can go home with some great memories, of the park and of the people.

There is a small kennel just outside the park about a mile down from the west entrance on the west side of Quail Springs Rd. It's run by a vet. I'll see if I can get some info and post it up.

Good idea, I didn't think of this.
