Head Route Setter
Job Summary:
This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the routes set on the climbing wall. Equal time needs to be devoted to setting new routes on the main climbing wall as well as new problems on the bouldering wall. The head setter should be able to organize the gym so all abilities will enjoy their climbing experience. This person should also be able to manage the routes needed for whatever competition the facility hosts. This is a full-time position that reports to the operations manager.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Set safe, high-quality routes.
Recruit and train new route setters.
Help select new holds and accessories to improve the quality of the routes in the gym.
Monitor all customer feedback to assist in making better routes for the customers.
Talk to the instructors so that routes may be set to help with teaching specific skills.
Keep operations manager aware of anything that might need to be addressed with regard to safety or customer satisfaction.
Understand different techniques so all aspects and skills needed for climbing will be presented to customers.
Organize all routes set so there is an equal distribution of easy to hard routes.
Keep a timely turnover time for all routes in the gym.
Must be able to notice when a route might cause an injury to climbers and be willing to change it.
Ability to change routes that might have inconsistent moves.
Keep a safe working environment by following the route setting safety guidelines.
Keep routes maintained at all times. (Spinning holds, tape missing, broken holds, etc.)
Willing to put in extra route setting time for competitions.
Report to the operations manager monthly about the status of the routes in the gym.
Qualifications:
Highly skilled climber.
Ability to on sight 5.10.
Good communication and organizational skills.
Some previous route setting experience.
Previous experience setting for climbing competitions.
Ability to take constructive criticism and adjust if it would benefit the gym
