Hi there. I'm looking for a climbing location in Southern California that has the look of Joshua Tree but isn't within the park boundary. It's too expensive to film inside the park.

This is for a surfing show called "The Breaks" and you'll get to see Amy Paffrath http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2625932/ all harnessed up on the show. Any help will be appreciated.

We're looking for a stair step climb with a flat wall below a flat floor area and then another flat wall to climb on. Got that? So, Wall... flat spot to set up camera and crew and then another wall.

I'll attach some paragraphs from the script to give you a more detailed description. If you've got a good spot please email us at thebreaksshow@gmail.com

Also, looking for a campground with some big flat rocks in view.

Thanks.

EXT. JOSHUA TREE - MID MORNING
CLIMBING GEAR MONTAGE:
Carabiners clank, rope is fed through a figure 8, feet dig
into dirt, a hand goes into a chalk bag.
ROCK LEDGE
Tyler’s hand rises into view. It fumbles around the top of
the ledge for a hand hold and finds a small outcropping of
rock. Tyler’s head pops up. He winces and heaves his upper
body to the top of the climb.
INTERCUT WITH BOTTOM OF CLIFF
Vanessa belays Tyler’s rope.
VANESSA
Good, now swing your leg up!
11.
Tyler crawls to the top of the ledge and looks down
triumphantly.
VANESSA (CONT’D)
Now take the rope and secure it to
the anchor!
Tyler detaches his rope and secures it to an anchor bolt in
the rock.
TYLER
On belay!
Vanessa pulls her rope tight and approaches the wall. She
easily climbs to the top.
On the ledge, Vanessa stands up with her hands on her hips.
She sizes up Tyler and nods.
VANESSA
Good work surfer boy. Almost to the
top. Now’s the fun part.
Vanessa drops the rope from her harness, pats Tyler’s
shoulder as she passes him and walks to another flat wall.
She turns back and smiles.
Tyler scans the flat wall. He sees no easy hand holds.
TYLER
That?!? No way. I got my butt
kicked on the bunny slope. There’s
not even any hand holds on this
one.
VANESSA
Relax. It’s easier than it looks.
This is bouldering. You won’t even
need the rope.
TYLER
No safety net?
Vanessa smiles mischievously and turns to the wall. She rolls
her shoulder and springs up onto the rock. Three steps up she
maneuvers herself to face Tyler with her back against the
wall and anchors her hands and feet making a human obstacle
course.
VANESSA
There. Now there’s hand holds.
Tyler hesitates.
12.
VANESSA (CONT’D)
(smiles)
Trust me.
Tyler shakes his head and tentatively steps forward. He
places one hand on Vanessa’s foot and the other behind her
opposite knee. He looks up. Vanessa stares down at him.
Tyler pulls himself off the ground and onto the wall. Vanessa

There are a lot of areas in the High Desert that have Joshua Tree-like rock formations. Does the location also have to have Joshua trees (ie, the plants)?

No, although they are very cinematic, I'll settle for the desert rocks w/o the trees.

So wait, the person leading the pitch needs verbal cues on what do do? And then they both unrobe, part way up the climb and proceed to climb on each other?

As for location, how about Tahquitz?

Done and Done. We shot in Apple Valley. Thanks for the suggestions.

BTW he wasn't leading the pitch. She set up the coarse and was belaying him up.

Cheers.
