(or, dancing is like climbing)

Here are some general similarities:
  • Leading/following roles

  • Communication

  • Trust

  • Balance

  • Rhythm

  • Beauty/joy

  • Any others?

my gf tried to use this as a motivation in our tango classes. she said that if I could look like I was dancing up the wall then why couldn't I walk her around the room. I told her because there's a difference between going up and forward.

    now we're into flamenco.

There is a beautiful tribute (poem) in the beginning of a climbing guide to the Tetons. It was written by the daughter of the primary author who had died fire fighting. If I remember right, it had an element of dance in the context of climbing. Perhaps I'll yet find that book. Blush

Edit: I won't copy it here given the copyright. But one can read the poem by going to Amazon's A Climbers Guide For The Teton Range Third Edition, pick the option to look inside the book, and page forward to just after the Acknowledgements section.

Yes, you have to work your ass off if you want to be decent at climbing or dancing.

Hmm... not from me. I suck at dancing, and was born climbing. So... yeah, not seeing it.

Dancing talk is only semi-comprehensible (and extremely boring) to the non-dancers. Just like climbing talk is to non-climbers.

I always say climbing is like a cross between gymnastics and ballet.

Also, unlike other sports where they say "don't worry about how you look," in climbing it helps to be smooth and precise. Dance across the rock.
