Looking to buy Sterling Marathon rope for toprope setup. Possibly occasional rappel (yes I know ideally I need static rope for rappels)
Looking to buy:
Sterling Marathon Mega - 11.2 mm
Sterling Marathon Ultra - 10.7 mm
Sterling Marathon Sport - 10.4 mm
I googled reviews and everyone seems to like the rope.
What do you guys think? Good rope? Which diameter should I go with?
I guess the thickest rope (11.2mm in this case) will be best, since toproping puts a lot of abuse on the tope.
Any reviews? Worth the money?
Any other ropes you guys recommend for toproping over this?

What belay device do you plan to use? I'd hate to try and get an 11.2-mm rope through a Grigri.

Bigger is generally better, but the 10.7 is pretty sizable. You'd be good with the 11.2. I have a 12.3 mm static that is stiff as hell and you can still get it through a gri gri with some assisting. For longevity, make the surface that the rope goes over on top as large as you can. 2 steel lockers is ideal. You will be washing the rope less. Washing a rope will shrink it and wear it more wear than not, so the large bearing surface of 2 steel lockers will be doing 2 tasks by also causing less wear as you dog routes.

many ropes fuzz up and get thicker/stiffer with use ...
just like anything else
keep that in mind

first I would go with the 10.7.
Second I have been climbing for over 18 years and have yet to rappel on a static line so dont sweat it.
Sterling make great ropes,
My final suggestion is find out what belay/rappel device you what or have and then figure out what diameter rope feeds through it well. The 10.4 will obisouly be the best BUT can the 10.7 or 11.2 be fine or too big?

Hey guys,
thanks for suggestions.
I'll prolly run thru an atc xp.
Leaning towards a 10.7. Should be strong enough to take a lead fall should it ever see a lead climb.

The 10.4, and the 10.1, and the 9.8, and the 9.4, and the 9.2 are also strong enough to take a lead fall. Though maybe not so ideal for TR. I wouldn't go bigger than the 10.7 and I'd think hard about that.
How often will you use it? Recommended shelf life is around 10 years and the Sterling's wear pretty well. Are you going to wear it out? If not I'd get a lighter, better handling rope.

I've got three of them now. I love Sterling ropes. 10.7 is way to large. You're gonna regret that. Go smaller.

Some ATC-XPs (the ones with solid sides) are even tighter than a Grigri. I'd say 10.7 is as large as you want to go. And who says you need a static to rap?

The relatively skinny (compared to what you are looking at) Marathon Pro is more than burly enough for toproping. They last a really long time, even when abused.
